Role Overview

As a member of the Engineering Department, the Ship Superintendent is responsible for maintenance and operation of all technical equipment onboard the Company’s fleet of vessels as assigned.

This individual will provide technical support to the shore-based Engineering Team, supporting deck and engine purchasing activities and be responsible for the relevant part of the assigned vessel’s budget.

Role Responsibilities

  • Maintenance and Engineering Coordination: Plan and schedule maintenance activities, engineering work, drydocking, and wet docking operations
  • Refurbishment Planning: Collaborate with the assigned Director of Shipboard Services to effectively plan and schedule refurbishments
  • Documentation Management: Maintain and review shipboard reports from Chief Engineers, including:
  • Equipment Status
  • ReportsPreventative
  • Maintenance Program Reports (NS-5)
  • Survey Reports
  • Certificates and Drawings
  • Instruction Manuals
  • Vital Spare Parts Lists
  • Incident Reports and RAMPS
  • Ensure all technical docs are current and well-organized
  • SMS Compliance: Familiarize and comply with the Company’s Safety Management System (SMS) responsibilities
  • Class Society Requirements: Understand and interface with Class Society requirements, ensuring ships comply with Class, Flag State, SOLAS, USCG, and Company’s SMS regulations. Relay any concerns to Management promptly
  • Technical Operations Oversight: Ensure safe, optimal, and economical technical maintenance and operations of the ships, including budget management
  • Lube Oil Sample Analysis: Analyze and track each vessel’s scheduled lube oil sample reports, communicating findings to each ship and the Director of Technical in a timely manner
  • On-Site Support: Visit ships with specific issues, providing direction and assistance to shipboard management for problem-solving as needed
  • Crew Manning Review: Periodically review deck and engine manning standards with the Marine Operations Director to ensure adequacy
  • Reporting Responsibilities: Provide the VP of Fleet Operations with a brief monthly summary and a comprehensive semi-annual condition report for each ship
  • Ship Checks and Specifications: Conduct ship checks and develop specifications for dry-docking and repair periods, ensuring dry dock reports are completed promptly
  • Electrical Matters Oversight: Direct and collaborate closely with the Electrical Ship Superintendent on all electrical, audio, and video matters
  • Regulatory Adherence: Ensure compliance with all relevant classification regulations, acknowledging potential changes over time
  • Spare Parts Management: Purchase and track vital deck and engine spare parts while providing support and technical guidance to the Technical Purchasing Manager
  • Requisition Approval: Review and approve all requisitions and purchase orders from deck and engine shipboard teams


Minimum Requirements

  • Degree in Marine Engineering or Chief Engineer License with experience on passenger vessels or equivalent industry experience (NOTE: Candidates with a degree in Mechanical Engineering or non degree technical certification may be considered on a case to case basis depending on previous experience.)
  • Proficient computer skills in the Windows operating system, including word-processing and spread sheet applications
  • Outstanding time management skills and the ability to multitask
  • Excellent prioritization capabilities and the ability to consistently meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently, as well as in a collaborative team environment
  • Occasional travel will be required

Using the English language, this person must have the ability to read, write, and comprehend policies, legal guidelines, correspondence, and memos. Must also possess the ability to effectively communicate--both in writing and orally--with a professional demeanor.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk and hear. The employee will also be required to write and type. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.

Compensation Statement

Lindblad Expeditions determines the pay for positions using local, national, and industry-specific survey data. We evaluate external equity and the cost of labor/prevailing wage index in the relative marketplace for jobs directly comparable to jobs within our company. Our posted salary range is based on national data and may be refined for a candidate's region/town/cost of living.

For new hires, we strive to make competitive offers allowing the new employee room for future growth. Salaries will be based on the applicant’s location, level of experience, education, and specialized knowledge and skills. An employee/candidate with a stronger skill set will receive higher pay.

Salary : $105,000 - $115,000
