Description/Job Summary

The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Hydrocarbon and Geothermal Energy Office (HGEO) is the hub of geothermal energy applied research, development, and demonstration activities. HGEO’s mission is to unleash the full potential of America’s hydrocarbon and geothermal resources to provide affordable, reliable, and secure energy. Lindahl Reed provides HGEO the expert technical and management resources through its $300M Scientific, Engineering, and Technical Support (SETS) support service contract to achieve its mission.

This position serves HGEO’s Office of Geothermal (OG). OG’s mission is to accelerate the discovery and development of gigawatt-scale geothermal energy and position geothermal as a competitive domestic source for reliable baseload electricity generation. OG works in partnership with industry, academia, DOE national laboratories, and others on research, development, and demonstration activities focused on technology R&D, pilots, and demonstrations, both within the enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) and hydrothermal resources space.

This position would support work in one of the three following portfolios:

  • Technology Research and Development: Assesses ways to improve geothermal exploration, drilling, materials, and power conversion, and looks at post-power uses like critical materials from geothermal brines.
  • Pilots and Demonstrations: Focuses on enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) demonstration projects as well as reservoir improvements for EGS and thermal energy storage.
  • Commercial Scale-Up: Works to bolster geothermal permitting processes, modeling tools and capabilities, awareness of geothermal energy and understanding of its value to the grid, and the geothermal workforce.


Position Responsibilities

Lindahl Reed has a need for a Technical Project Monitor that will directly support projects in the Office of Geothermal (OG) in scientific, engineering, and technical analyses. The position will support one or more portfolios within OG, as noted above.

Specific position responsibilities include:

  • Support the GTO in identifying, organizing, and conducting complex geothermal technology RD&D analyses in response to various stakeholders’ needs and requests (DOE, White House, Congressional, Industry, etc.).
  • Project monitoring of geothermal RD&D awards from inception to close-out in collaboration with GTO federal staff, from developing funding opportunity announcements to project retrospectives. Specific tasks may involve:
    • Negotiating new award packages.
    • Tracking of award research progress (scope, schedule, and budget) through quarterly report review.
    • Reviewing and providing input to interim project deliverables and final technical reports.
    • Coordination, communication, and meeting preparation/scheduling with internal and external stakeholders in support of GTO-sponsored project success.
    • Processing award modifications using a variety of government systems.
    • Merit review of submitted research proposals/funding applications.
  • Support the development, coordination, and management of competitive solicitations and merit reviews.
  • Engage with GTO stakeholders on an appropriate level to ensure needs and gaps are being addressed where possible at the Federal level.
  • Assist in the development of internal briefing materials for decision makers and contribute technical review of external communications.
  • Successfully represent the program status to senior government officials, congressional stakeholders, academia, and industry partners.
  • Assist in coordination efforts with government agency partners external to GTO.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in relevant Engineering or Scientific discipline (Geophysics, Petroleum Engineering, Geology, Environmental Engineering, Energy Systems, etc.).
  • 3 years of experience.
  • Client/stakeholder relations.
  • Professional attitude.
  • Highly organized with a strong attention to detail.
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, OneNote, and Teams.
  • Excellent communication skills – verbal and written.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated independent problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to balance multiple long- and short-term projects with competing priorities.
  • Familiar with geothermal technologies.


Preferred Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

  • Expertise in reservoir systems, drilling/well construction, well completion design, reservoir characterization, production/injection operations and/or geothermal reservoir systems are strongly desired. (For positions supporting Technology Research and Development and/or Pilots and Demonstrations)
  • Experience with utility regulatory proceedings, environmental policy, electric power system grid modeling, and/or geothermal energy systems. (For positions supporting Commercial Scale-Up)
  • Project management and coordination experience/PMP certification is a plus.
  • Ability to actively track and monitor government-funded research and development projects.
  • Experience working within DOE.
  • Self-starter, an ability to work both independently and as part of a highly dynamic collaborative team.
