Environmental Services Technician

PURPOSE:

The Environmental Services Technician is responsible for performing routine custodial and sanitation services to maintain campus facilities in a clean, safe, and welcoming condition. This position supports the daily cleaning needs of academic, residential, administrative, and public spaces while providing quality customer service to students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Cleaning & Sanitation

• Clean and sanitize restrooms, classrooms, offices, hallways, common areas, and other assigned spaces.
• Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and remove trash/recycling from facilities.
• Refill restroom and cleaning supplies as needed.
• Clean glass, doors, furniture, and high-touch surfaces.
• Perform floor care tasks such as buffing, scrubbing, and spot cleaning.

Operations Support

• Set up and break down rooms for meetings, events, and campus activities.
• Report maintenance issues, damages, or safety concerns to supervisors.
• Respond to service requests in a timely manner.
• Support seasonal or special cleaning projects as assigned.

Safety & Compliance

• Follow proper chemical handling and cleaning procedures.
• Use custodial equipment safely and effectively.
• Maintain clean and organized janitorial closets and storage areas.
• Follow all institutional safety policies and procedures.

Customer Service

• Interact professionally with students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
• Represent the department in a courteous and helpful manner.

• Attention to detail and quality assurance.
• Time management and prioritization.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Ability to follow directions and work independently or as part of a team.
• Reliable attendance and strong work ethic.
• Basic communication and time management skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Prior custodial, housekeeping, or environmental services experience.
• Experience operating custodial equipment and performing floor care.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• Prolonged standing and walking across campus facilities for inspections and operational support.
• Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 lbs., including equipment and supplies.
• Frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching (overhead and below waist).
• Operation of custodial equipment and carts, including pushing/pulling loaded equipment.
• Exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, and varying indoor/outdoor environmental conditions.
