What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Professor of Special Education position at Lincoln University of Missouri?
Purpose:
Full-time, tenure-track, nine-month/year appointment beginning August 2025. The preferred
candidate will be qualified to teach special education courses and K-12 education courses at the
undergraduate and graduate level. Rank and salary will be determined by experience and qualifications. Available ranks of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor.
Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities:
- Preparing and teaching a 12-hour load per semester of assigned undergraduate and graduate
special and K-12 education courses, both in-seat and online. - Advise undergraduate students with class schedules, preparation for certification exams.
- Oversee student-teachers and practicum students.
- Maintain records of grades and attendance.
- Hold 10 hours of office hours per week.
- Active scholarship, research, publications, and/or grant applications in the field of Education.
- Serve on departmental, college, and university committees.
- Attend university events and ceremonies such as commencement.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
- Actively participate in ongoing accreditation efforts at both state and national level.
- Participate in a local chapter of the MO Council of Administrators of Special Education (LASE).
- Hold membership in the MO Council for Exceptional Children (CEC).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Required: The preferred candidate will have Missouri certification, or the ability to obtain
Missouri certification, in Mild/Moderate/Cross Categorical K-12 education. Experience with
diverse communities, students, faculty and staff. Knowledge of Missouri teaching standards and
use of best practices. The ability to advise and mentor students through their degree program. Preferred: Three years of fu ll-time teaching at the K- 12 level. Experience and knowledge with education accreditation at the state and national level. Ability to teach in-person and online
classes. Ability to create and maintain relationships with community partners and stakeholders.
Education and Experience:
Required:
- A Doctorate (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) in a field of Education/Special Education, or the
completion of a doctorate within one year (ABD). - Experience with teaching Special Education in the Missouri K-12 school systems.
Preferred:
- In addition to the required education, experience with teaching in Higher Education.
- Experience with Canvas as an LMS and educational software.
- Knowledge of required state exams.
- The preferred candidate will be able to align curriculum to state teaching standards and effectively communicate verbally and in writing to students, faculty, and the public.
- Will establish and maintain professional working relationships with K-12 schools districts.
- Will be able to work well with a diverse group of students from various backgrounds, faculty, and staff.
- The preferred candidate will have a knowledge and understanding of current issues and trends in K-12 education.
Certifications, Licenses, Registrations:
Required: A Missouri teaching certificate in Mild/Moderate, Cross-Categorial (K-12) or the ability to obtain Missouri certification.
Extent of Public Contact
Yes, with area K-12 schools for practicums and supervising student teachers.
Physical Demands:
- The ability to physically teach in a classroom setting, move between offices and buildings.
- Ability to drive at least 30 miles radius of Jefferson City.
- Visits to student teachers and practicum students' schools may fall outside of usual office hours.
Physical Requirements:
- Walking, lifting, equipment, operation, etc.
- Ability to lift 25 lbs., move between classrooms and office.
