PURPOSE:

The Academic Success Advisor supports student persistence, retention, and degree completion through proactive advising, targeted academic recovery interventions, and first-year instruction. Serving as a primary point of contact for new, first-year, and academically at-risk students, the Advisor provides holistic guidance that integrates academic planning, policy navigation, and engagement with campus resources. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

First-Year Student Advising: Academic Success Advisors support new, incoming, and early-credit students (including transfer first-year students with fewer than 30 credit hours) through proactive advising, transition support, and retention-focused engagement.

Student Academic Recovery Advising (Probation & Intervention Support): Advisors provide structured, developmental advising for students on academic probation and those requiring targeted academic recovery interventions.

Teaching First-Year Experience Courses (GE 101 & GE 102): Academic Success Advisors serve as instructors in the University College First-Year Seminar sequence and are responsible for structured academic instruction, assessment, and cohort engagement.

Committee Assignments: Academic Success Advisors contribute to institutional governance, planning, and program development through committee service.

Special Assignment (Projects) Duties: These duties reflect the role's flexible, project-based responsibilities aligned with institutional priorities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree from an accredited institution.
  • One or more years of professional experience in academic support services, student success, advising, or retention-focused roles.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace (including Google Forms, Docs, Sheets, and related applications).
  • Ability to quickly learn and effectively use new software platforms and advising technologies.
  • Strong initiative with the ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in student Affairs, Higher Education Administration, Counseling, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of professional experience in higher education or closely related field
  • Experience working with first-year students, academically at-risk populations, or transition programs.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and human relations skills, with the ability to build rapport with diverse student populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise professional discretion.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and documentation skills.

Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations:

  • No specific certifications or licenses required.
  • Relevant professional certifications in advising, student affairs, or student success (e.g., NACADA, coaching certifications) are desirable.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • This position requires the ability to operate standard office equipment, communicate effectively, and prepare and maintain written and electronic records.
  • The role involves regular sitting, standing, walking, and the use of hands for typing and handling materials.

Salary : $40,000 - $42,000
