What are the responsibilities and job description for the PRN Phlebotomist position at LINCOLN INTERNAL MEDICINE ASSOCIATES PC?
Phlebotomist
General Summary:
The purpose of this position is to assist the laboratory with obtaining specimens in an appropriate method therefore preserving the integrity of the specimen for testing purposes Additional purpose is to assist department manager with keeping area supplied with the appropriate supplies as they pertain to phlebotomy and keeping the area antiseptic as required by following the approved guidelines of the certifying body for the laboratory and OSHA.
Verify correct patient by using the two-identifier system.
Verify tests to orders requested. Resolve unusual test orders by contacting the physician, outside physician offices, or referenced labs. Obtains further clarifications when uncomfortable with available information.
Obtain blood specimens by veni-punctures or finger stick observing the principles of aseptic techniques required under OSHA and other safety guidelines including needle stick safety protocols.
Obtain swab specimens based upon best practices for the test.
Obtain sufficient amount and type of specimen to perform requested tests. Maintain the integrity of all specimens.
Instruct patient on appropriate method of obtaining urine and stool samples, including those requiring 234hours of samples.
Provide appropriate routing, handling, and processing of various specimens.
Maintain the strictest of patient confidentiality at all items following the appropriate HIPAA / HITECH guidelines.
PRN - as needed. Minimum on 24 hours per month. Hours are M-F; 7 am - 430 pm
