THE WHOOPI MONOLOGUES


NOTE: All roles require strong language skills. Performers with physical theatre experience are encouraged to audition


SEEKING:

A DISCO, AND A HUSBAND - Character is female identifying, late 20s , Black/of the African diaspora. Self identifies as varied ability - she does not have the ability to move her hands, hips, legs, shoulders or voice freely with complete control. This character meets a man, falls in love and will be married in two weeks. She is discovering the world, love, and her own body in a new and totally unexpected way. This play will take an ensemble-based approach to language and theatre-making. Encouraged to audition: Folks who are wheelchair users (part or full time), utilize assistive walking devices and/or mobility aides, have alternative forms of speech/communication/body movement/expression in general. There will be some exploration of physicality and movement choreography with the director, but the team encourages people with lived experience, in some ways, with the character described.

BLONDE GIRL - Character is female identifying, 18 to play 7 years old, Black/of the African diaspora. The character portrayed is a 7-year old girl obsessed with having long, blonde hair and has complex understandings of what it may mean to live in a Black body. Language covers images of race, belonging, acceptance and more. Physical theatre experience is a plus. This play will take an ensemble-based approach to the language and theatre-making.

THE JAMAICAN LADY (THERE IS AN OFFER OUT FOR THIS ROLE. )- Character is female identifying, 30s , Black/of the African diaspora. This character is a Jamaican woman who is hired to be a companion to an older, rich man who surprisingly provides for her with his dying wish. Language covers themes of immigration and more. With strong comedic ability. This play will take an ensemble-based approach to the language and theatre-making.

FONTAINE (THIS ROLE IS CAST.)- Character is female identifying, any age, Black/of the African diaspora. This character is a sharp-witted, recovering addict who goes on a trip overseas to Amsterdam & Germany. While there, she visits the house of Anne Frank. Language covers themes of race, The Holocaust, belonging, anxiety, and more. This play will take an ensemble-based approach to the language and theatre-making.

SURFER CHICK (THIS ROLE IS CAST.) - Character is female identifying, 18 , Black/of the African diaspora,. The character portrayed is a young teenager from California who loves the beach and loves to surf. Character possesses a youthful outlook, and great emotional vulnerability. She has a life changing experience when she is forced to consider and carry out abortion on herself. Language covers themes of abandonment, abortion, sex, and complex understandings of religion, family and support. This play will take an ensemble-based approach to the language and theatre-making.
