CAD Engineer

Lin Engineering - Motor Specialists in Motion
Morgan Hill, CA Full Time
POSTED ON 4/17/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 5/16/2026

In this role, you will be central to the full product lifecycle — from early concept through first production — designing robust motor assemblies, managing technical drawings and BOMs, and driving engineering change initiatives that directly impact product quality and customer satisfaction.

This is a hands-on engineering position suited for a motivated mechanical engineer who thrives in a cross-functional environment, takes pride in clean CAD work, and understands the relationship between good design and efficient manufacturing.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Product Design & Development

  • Design and develop motor products from concept through production, including 3D CAD models, detailed engineering drawings, and proof-of-concept evaluations.
  • Generate drawings and bills of materials (BOMs) for Moons' motor projects; define and document product specifications and performance criteria.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams — including manufacturing, supply chain, and quality — to align design intent with process capability.

Supplier Coordination & Tooling

  • Partner with supplier factory teams on part and tooling quotations; conduct comprehensive design reviews.
  • Support part and tool development from initial quote through first article inspection and part approval.

Prototyping & Testing

  • Assemble, test, and analyze First Unit to Test (FUTT) prototypes; document findings and drive design iterations.
  • Conduct performance and functional testing; establish and maintain product specifications.

Engineering Change & Quality

  • Manage Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) — from initiation through disposition — with a focus on reducing response time and improving accuracy.
  • Participate in Design for Manufacturability and Failure Mode & Effects Analysis (DFMEA) as required.
  • Support field failure (RMA) root cause analysis and corrective action.

Cross-Functional Support

  • Provide technical guidance to manufacturing operations, Lin Engineering's design team, and procurement personnel.
  • Evaluate competitive products and prepare comparative analysis reports to identify improvement opportunities.
  • Complete and follow up on engineering requests and orders in a timely manner.

Key Deliverables & Success Metrics

  • Measurable reduction in ECN response time from submission to final disposition.
  • Reduction in RMA occurrences attributable to engineering change errors.
  • Fewer drawing and technical errors identified at the ECN review stage.
  • Timely and accurate completion of engineering requests and first article inspections.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution required.
  • 0–3 years of experience in product design and engineering change management preferred.
  • Experience designing high-volume mechanical products using die casting, injection molding, CNC machining, or metal stamping processes is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of motor design principles (stepper, servo, or BLDC) is a significant advantage.
  • Solid understanding of the relationship between part design, assembly design, and manufacturing process selection.

Technical Skills & Competencies (Required)

  • Proficiency in SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, Pro/E (Creo), or comparable 3D CAD platform.
  • Strong working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, MS Project).

Preferred / Nice to Have

  • Hands-on experience with mechanical and electrical test equipment: calipers, oscilloscopes, DMMs, dynamometers, torque transducers.
  • Familiarity with SAP ERP or comparable PLM/ERP system for BOM and ECN management.
  • Exposure to Lean methodologies: Process Mapping, Visual Management, Standard Work, 5S, and elimination of the 7 Wastes.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This position is primarily office-based with regular time in an engineering lab/prototype environment. The role requires the ability to operate standard engineering test equipment and to occasionally lift up to 25 lbs. Reasonable accommodations will be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this role.

Compensation & Benefits

Annual Salary Range: $73,000 – $80,000. Compensation is determined based on skills, experience, and internal equity. Lin Engineering offers a competitive benefits package including:

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company match
  • Paid time off (PTO) and company holidays
  • Employee development and training support
