Job Purpose

The Sports Trainer is responsible for coordinating and facilitating all strength and conditioning training in the weight room. This role focuses on developing and implementing training programs tailored to the needs of the participating kamaliʻi, promoting physical fitness, and ensuring the safety and effectiveness of all activities. The ideal candidate will have a passion for youth development, a strong background in fitness training, and the ability to inspire and motivate young athletes.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Program Development & Implementation:
  • Design and implement strength and conditioning programs for kamaliʻi of various age groups and fitness levels.
  • Tailor training sessions to meet the specific needs and goals of kamaliʻi or teams, focusing on improving athletic performance, strength, endurance, and overall fitness.
  • Ensure that all training programs are age-appropriate, safe, and align with best practices in youth physical development.
  • Training Facilitation:
    • Conduct and supervise daily strength and conditioning sessions in the weight room.
    • Provide instruction on proper exercise techniques, form, and equipment usage to prevent injuries.
    • Monitor kamaliʻi during workouts, offering guidance, encouragement, and corrective feedback as needed.
    • Collaborate and coordinate communications with external strength and conditioning focused partners/coaches that will provide instruction at LC.
    • Safety & Equipment Management:
    • Maintain a safe and clean weight room environment, ensuring all equipment is in good working condition and properly organized.
    • Conduct regular safety checks and report any equipment issues or safety hazards to the appropriate personnel.
    • Enforce all safety guidelines and protocols, ensuring that all kamaliʻi adhere to the rules and use equipment correctly.
    • Youth Engagement & Motivation:
    • Build positive relationships with kamaliʻi, fostering an environment that encourages participation, personal growth, and self-confidence.
    • Develop strategies to engage and motivate kamaliʻi, promoting a lifelong interest in fitness and health.
    • Address any behavioral issues or conflicts in a supportive and constructive manner.
    • Collaboration & Communication:


    • Work closely with coaches, teams, and other LC staff to coordinate strength and conditioning programs that complement other sports, activities, or programs.
    • Communicate effectively with kamaliʻi, ʻohana, and LT/LC staff regarding training schedules, goals, and progress.
    • Provide regular updates and reports on program participation, outcomes, and any areas of concern.
    • Build a strong relationship with NLOK members to provide program support.
    • Other duties:


    • Contribute to the Trust’s success by accepting new assignments, helping team members, learning new skills, and striving to improve team and organization results
    • Evening and weekend hours required as needed
    • Others as needed and assigned
Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree (in sports medicine, kinesiology, or similar) or minimum of 4-5 years of experience in strength and conditioning training, preferably with youth or adolescent athletes.
  • Certification as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) or equivalent (required).
  • Strong knowledge of exercise physiology, strength training techniques, and injury prevention.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Capacity to perform frontline work in a variety of settings (schools, public spaces, office, distressed communities, etc.)
  • Comfort with youth work, particularly engaging with vulnerable youth

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to demonstrate exercises and techniques, including lifting weights and performing physical activities.
  • Capacity to stand, walk, and move around the weight room for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and move equipment, up to 50 pounds.
