POSITION SUMMARY
The Senior Project Mechanical Engineer, New Products is a key part of the engineering team, developing and supporting industry leading luminaire designs. This position will lead the development of luminaires through each phase with a high level of cross-functional collaboration with technical procurement of purchased components and manufacturing on prototype builds prior to product release. Lead the design decisions along with managing the projects through optical, safety and performance testing. Project management skills include establishing and managing project timelines, cost targets, competitive analysis, and a focus on fast time to market.
Essential Functions Statement(s)
- Lead mechanical design for new products and product improvement projects
- Direct and manage third-party partners and resources to deliver new products
- Apply creative thinking and analysis to develop unique, innovative concepts that meet or exceed customer requirements and product specifications
- Create project scope to support product management on product requirements and assure agreed targets and timing meet the needs of our customers and company
- Owner of complete project deliverables, including design documentation (i.e. 3D Assemblies, 2D Drawings), production documentation (i.e. COREBOM, Work Instructions), and technical marketing documentation (i.e IES Files, Installation Instructions), cost to price study, etc.
- Concurrently share design methodology within the multi-disciplinary engineering team to strengthen capabilities
Position Qualifications
- Proven track record of executing new product development projects from initial project scoping to designing and testing prototypes through implementation in production
- Strong evidence and experience in designing mechanical components (e.g., plastic/metal parts, mechanical assemblies, sheet metal, etc.) and understanding of manufacturing them (i.e. sheet metal fabrication, extrusions, die-casting, injection molding, etc.)
- High level of exposure to technical sourcing for purchased components (i.e. LEDs, Connectors, Power Supplies, Optics, etc.) and ability to compare options quickly for the best value decision
- Strong communication and organizational skills – ability to grow relationships within other departments and align for successful outcomes
- Autonomous and self-directed with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Detail-oriented, with the ability to “roll up your sleeves” and use hand tools (i.e. battery powered drills, screwdrivers, wrenches, etc.) to help successfully meet project deadlines
- Customer-focused with a strong sense of urgency
- Team focus - demonstrated history of building rapport and quickly integrating with a new team
- Business Insight – the ability to quickly analyze design options to formulate the right-sized approach
Skills & Abilities
Education: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, or equivalent experience
Experience: 15 years of experience with electro-mechanical design, ideally with some experience in lighting
Computer Skills: Office 365, Teams, Solidworks or other CAD software, ERP (Epicor) applications
Physical Abilities: Able to travel onto production floor to work with production team. Able to lift 25 pounds and work with hands and tools.
