Lighthouse Risk is currently seeking a Director of Underwriting to join our team in Dallas, TX.
Position Overview:
The Director of Underwriting will lead the strategic and operational underwriting function for Lighthouse Risk’s commercial property portfolio. This individual will play a key role in shaping underwriting strategy, ensuring technical excellence, managing portfolio performance, and mentoring a growing team of underwriters. The ideal candidate brings experience in E&S property underwriting, a strong command of risk selection and pricing discipline, and a proven ability to balance production and profitability.
- Develop and execute the underwriting strategy for Lighthouse Risk’s middle-market property portfolio, ensuring alignment with overall MGA goals.
- Lead, coach, and mentor a team of underwriters, promoting technical excellence, accountability, and collaboration.
- Partner with executive leadership to refine underwriting appetite, guidelines, and capacity utilization strategies.
- Drive continuous improvement in underwriting processes, analytics, and workflow efficiency.
Underwriting Management
- Oversee underwriting activities across habitational, hospitality, retail, and mixed-use property classes.
- Evaluate and approve risks within delegated authority; refer complex or high-limit accounts to CUO or capacity partners as required.
- Ensure underwriting compliance with Lighthouse Risk guidelines, reinsurance treaties, and carrier requirements.
- Maintain underwriting discipline through rigorous review of submissions, inspections, valuations, and coverage terms.
Portfolio Performance & Analytics
- Monitor portfolio performance metrics including rate adequacy, hit ratio, loss ratio, and exposure concentration.
- Utilize catastrophe models (AIR, RMS) and internal tools to assess and manage aggregate risk and accumulation.
- Collaborate with actuarial and data teams to develop and refine pricing models, rating tools, and risk scoring methodologies.
- Identify emerging trends in property exposures and propose data-driven underwriting adjustments.
Distribution & Relationship Management
- Build and maintain relationships with retail and wholesale distribution partners across the U.S.
- Represent Lighthouse Risk in market meetings, conferences, and industry associations.
- Partner with distribution leadership to develop broker segmentation strategies and optimize submission flow.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management, Finance, or related field (CPCU, ARM, or equivalent designations preferred).
- Experience developing underwriting guidelines, pricing models, or MGA program frameworks.
- Exposure to rating tools, API-based submissions, or digital underwriting environments.
- Minimum 5 years of commercial property underwriting experience, including at least 3 years in the E&S market.
- Demonstrated success managing underwriting teams or portfolios within a property MGA, carrier, or Lloyd’s platform.
- Strong technical knowledge of property construction, protection, occupancy, and exposure (COPE) analysis.
- Experience with habitational, hospitality, and retail property classes.
- Proficiency in CAT modeling tools (AIR, RMS, or equivalent) and exposure management platforms.
- Strong analytical and decision-making skills with a disciplined, profitability-driven mindset.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and leadership abilities.
