Company Description

Lighthouse Family Medicine & Wellness is a primary care clinic based in Lansdowne, VA, dedicated to offering accessible, compassionate, and high-quality healthcare. Our comprehensive services include preventive care, chronic condition management, women’s health, pediatrics, wellness care, and telemedicine. We prioritize a patient-first approach by fostering a comfortable and understanding environment for everyone, regardless of whether it is their first visit or their hundredth. Our mission is to nurture community health, empower patients with knowledge and personalized care, and promote long-term well-being.

Role Description

We are seeking a full-time Medical Assistant who can independently manage back-office clinical operations and provide direct support to the provider in a fast-paced primary care environment. This on-site role requires strong clinical judgment, excellent workflow organization, and advanced proficiency with AthenaHealth (Athena) EMR, as you will be responsible for timely and accurate chart documentation, order management, and clinical messaging throughout the day.

In addition to direct clinical support, the Medical Assistant will perform key administrative tasks that ensure efficient daily operations and high-quality patient care. Responsibilities include preparing patients for examinations, updating and maintaining medical records, assisting during medical procedures, managing clinical supplies, and supporting patient flow from check-in to check-out. The role may also involve scheduling appointments, coordinating follow-up care, and assisting with general office functions as needed to keep the practice running smoothly.

Qualifications

• Room patients and obtain detailed vitals (BP, pulse, temp, O2, weight) and complete comprehensive intake/history

• Document all clinical and intake information accurately and efficiently in Athena

• Prepare, clean, and fully restock exam rooms daily; uphold strict infection-control protocols

• Set up equipment and instruments for procedures, vaccines, exams, and pellet insertions

• Administer vaccines and injections (if certified), following state and practice guidelines

• Perform point-of-care testing including flu, strep, urinalysis, pregnancy tests, and EKGs

• Initiate and complete all provider orders in Athena: labs, imaging, referrals, and care plans

• Process incoming lab/imaging results and communicate outcomes to patients per provider direction

• Maintain and track clinical supplies, medication inventory, expiration logs, and vaccine temperature logs

• Sterilize instruments using approved protocols; ensure OSHA and practice safety compliance

• Manage the Athena clinical message queue—triage, respond, escalate, and close tasks promptly

• Support patient flow by scheduling follow-up appointments and ensuring continuity of care

• Assist with paperwork, medical forms, prior authorizations, prescriptions, and refill protocols

• Support basic administrative tasks such as appointment scheduling, patient communication, and supply management when needed

Requirements

• Medical Assistant certification required (CMA or equivalent strongly preferred)

• Strong clinical experience in a primary care or medical office setting

• Athena EMR experience REQUIRED

• Proficiency in medical assisting skills and familiarity with medical terminology

• Experience with medical office procedures including scheduling, records handling, and supply management

• Strong ability to provide compassionate, patient-centered care in a fast-paced environment

• Excellent communication, patient interaction, and organizational skills

• Strong understanding of HIPAA, OSHA, infection control, and clinical workflow standards

• Highly reliable, professional, detail-oriented, and able to work independently without step-by-step direction

• Comfortable managing the full clinical workflow and supporting the provider throughout the day
