What are the responsibilities and job description for the Automotive Technician position at Lighthouse Automotive?
Experienced Automotive Technician
Lighthouse Automotive
Manteo, NC
Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
No weekends
At Lighthouse Automotive you'll find advisors leading huddles, technicians and advisors working as one team, owners who are still investing in their own growth, and problems being handled through accountability instead of blame.
This is a shop where people can joke around without the work getting sloppy.
Here technicians are trusted to make decisions, use the right testing process, and take ownership of the repair without being micromanaged.
We have a Monday through Friday schedule because family and life matter.
Lighthouse Automotive is a family-owned shop in Manteo, NC, owned and operated by David and Jeannie Light. We have been serving the Outer Banks for 32 years and have grown from one strong location into two shops with a team that is serious about doing things better.
A few years ago, we reached a crossroads. Stay comfortable, scale back, or grow with intention. We chose growth. We joined an industry coaching group, made real changes to how we operated, purchased a second location, and built a stronger team. That first year after the move, we nearly doubled our sales.
Now we are looking for the right technician to help us keep raising the standard.
Who We Are Looking For
This is not a basic maintenance role.
This is for an experienced technician who enjoys the thinking side of the job. The testing. The process. The weird intermittent issue that does not show up the first time. The drivability concern that takes more than a code pull. The electrical problem that requires a wiring diagram, a meter, and patience.
If your default is to test before replacing parts, document what you found, and protect the customer by fixing the actual problem, you may fit well here.
How pay works
This is not traditional flat rate, and it is not straight hourly.
Our technicians are paid on a hybrid performance-based pay plan designed to provide stability while still rewarding production.
You have a base hourly rate. As your billed hours increase, your rate increases through production tiers. When you reach the next tier, the higher rate applies all the way back to hour one.
There is also a year-end bonus based on the number of hours you produce for the year.
The goal is simple: provide a steady foundation, reward strong production, and recognize technicians who consistently perform at a high level.
Top technicians can realistically expect $85,000 to $115,000

The work
We work on a balanced mix of domestic, Asian, European, and light-duty diesel vehicles. Because of our location, we also service boat trailers and fleet vehicles, including federal vehicles and business-owned fleets.
This role is expected to be about 50% mechanical repair and 50% testing.
We would especially like to find someone who is strong with European vehicles, but the bigger priority is finding someone with strong testing ability, solid judgment, and a repair process we can trust.
You may be the right fit if you are:
Experienced enough to work independently
Strong in testing and diagnostic process
Comfortable with electrical testing
Confident with drivability concerns
Able to work through intermittent problems
Comfortable using scan data, live data, and bi-directional controls
Able to read and use wiring diagrams
Experienced with DVOM testing
Strong with engine performance concerns
Comfortable with brakes, suspension, steering, cooling systems, and driveline work
Willing to document findings clearly in DVI
Comfortable communicating with advisors and teammates
Open to training and continued growth
Skilled without being arrogant
We prefer someone with 6 years of experience, but years alone do not tell the whole story. If you have the skill, testing ability, documentation habits, and attitude this role requires, we are open to talking.
What matters here
We are not looking for someone who thinks they already know everything.
We are looking for someone who knows enough to take ownership and cares enough to keep learning.
Someone who can handle responsibility without needing to be chased.
Someone who understands that a good technician does not just fix vehicles. They protect the customer, support the advisor, help the team, and make the shop better.
At Lighthouse Automotive, every voice carries weight. Growth is expected. Family comes first. And how we treat people, our team and our customers, is non-negotiable.
If you are ready for a shop where your skill matters, your input is valued, and your work still leaves room for a life outside the bay, Lighthouse Automotive may be the place for you, let's talk!
