Job Description:

The Behavioral Health Nurse Practitioner provides comprehensive psychiatric and mental health care to patients across the lifespan (or specified population). This role is built for a clinician who thrives with autonomy: someone who can carry an independent panel, make confident clinical decisions, adapt quickly to shifting patient needs and settings, and think on their feet when presentations are complex, urgent, or ambiguous. The ideal candidate combines strong diagnostic and prescribing skills with sound judgment and the resilience to work effectively with limited direct oversight.

Job Responsibilities:

• Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, including diagnostic assessment, mental status exam, and risk assessment (suicide, self-harm, violence).

• Develop, implement, and revise individualized treatment plans integrating pharmacologic and, where appropriate, psychotherapeutic and behavioral interventions.

• Prescribe, monitor, and adjust psychotropic medications; order and interpret relevant labs and screening tools; monitor for efficacy, adverse effects, and adherence.

• Manage a range of conditions including mood, anxiety, trauma-related, psychotic, and substance use disorders, as well as co-occurring medical concerns relevant to psychiatric care.

• Perform crisis assessment and intervention, safety planning, and appropriate level-of-care determinations and referrals.

• Coordinate care with primary care, therapists, care managers, social services, and community resources.

• Maintain accurate, timely documentation in the EHR consistent with regulatory, billing, and organizational standards.

• Participate in quality improvement, case review, and interdisciplinary team meetings.

• Practice within state scope-of-practice regulations, collaborative or supervisory agreements as required, and professional and ethical standards.

• Provide medication management and follow-up care for child, adolescent, and adult clients, as clinically appropriate.

• Respond to patient calls and medication refill requests within one business day, including weekends.

• Communicate with families and external providers as appropriate to support continuity of care.

• Provide resources, support, and referrals to external services when indicated.

• Contribute to the development and implementation of medication management policies and clinical workflows.

• Complete required organizational and clinical training and maintain continuing education requirements.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Hybrid Schedule:

The PMHNP will primarily provide in-person care, including psychiatric assessments, medication management and crisis intervention, at the designated office location(s). In addition, the role includes remote telepsychiatry services (e.g., follow-up appointments, consultations and care coordination) as clinically appropriate and in accordance with patient needs.

This hybrid model prioritizes face-to-face clinical engagement while leveraging telehealth to enhance flexibility, access and continuity of care.

Required Qualifications:

• Master's or Doctoral degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.

• Board certification as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) across the lifespan (or as required by the population served).

• Active, unrestricted state RN and APRN/NP licensure; current DEA registration (and state controlled-substance registration where applicable).

• Prescriptive authority appropriate to the state of practice.

• Current BLS certification.

• Minimum of 1 year of psychiatric clinical experience.

• Comfort treating clients across the lifespan (child, adolescent and adult populations).

Preferred Qualifications:

• Prior independent or autonomous practice in outpatient psychiatry, integrated behavioral health, crisis/emergency, telehealth, or community mental health settings.

• Experience with high-acuity or diverse caseloads and rapid clinical decision-making.

• Comfort and proficiency with EHR systems and telepsychiatry platforms.

• Strong background in psychopharmacology, psychiatric assessment, and CBT-informed treatment models.

• Demonstrated commitment to trauma-informed and culturally competent care.

• Active Illinois APRN-CS controlled substance license.

• Paneled with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, and UnitedHealthcare.

• Interest in continuous quality improvement and clinical innovation.

• Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and ethical standards related to psychiatric care.

Salary : $110,000 - $150,000
