Job Title: Optical Packaging Engineer / Optical Packaging Engineering Manager
Job Summary:
The Optical Packaging Engineer or Optical Packaging Engineering Manager will be responsible for the design, development, and optimization of the packaging and assembly processes for advanced optical transceiver products. In this role, you will leverage your deep expertise in state-of-the-art packaging technologies, including silicon photonics, electro-absorption modulated lasers (EMLs), and vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs), to enable the high-performance and cost-effective manufacturing of these critical networking components.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the design and development of the optical packaging platforms for high speed transceiver modules, ensuring optimal integration and performance of the optical, electrical, and mechanical components
- Collaborate with the optical, electrical, and mechanical engineering teams to define the packaging requirements, constraints, and design trade-offs
- Conduct comprehensive characterization and testing of optical components, such as photonic integrated circuits (PICs), lasers, SOAs, and photodetectors, to validate their performance and manufacturability
- Develop and implement innovative packaging techniques, including chip-to-chip/chip-to-wafer bonding, optical fiber alignment and coupling, and thermal management solutions
- Work closely with the NPI (New Product Introduction) team to drive yield improvement and optimized manufacturing processes for the optical transceiver products
- Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in optical packaging technologies and identify opportunities for performance and cost improvements
- For Engineering Manager role: Manage a team of optical packaging engineers, providing technical leadership, mentoring, and project coordination
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or a related technical discipline; advanced degree preferred
- For Optical Packaging Engineer role: 5 years of experience in optical packaging and assembly processes
- For Optical Packaging Engineering Manager role: 8 years of relevant experience, including 3 years in a people management capacity
- In-depth understanding of state-of-the-art optical packaging technologies, including silicon photonics, EML, and VCSEL-based solutions
- Extensive knowledge of optical component characterization techniques, such as PIC, laser, and photodetector testing and evaluation
- Proficiency in using design and simulation tools for optical packaging (e.g., OpticStudio, Solidworks, etc.)
- Hands-on experience with optical assembly and testing equipment, including optical alignment and coupling tools
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills to identify and resolve complex optical packaging challenges
- Familiarity with cloud data center infrastructure, AI accelerators, and high-performance computing workloads
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams
- For Engineering Manager role: Proven track record of leading and developing high-performing optical packaging engineering teams
