Job Title: Skills Instructor

MISSION
Advocacy
To provide specialized services and supports to program participants to help acquire skills and promote
independence. Complies with all principles of Human Rights, D.P.P.C., Department of Developmental
Services, the Division of Medical Assistance and all other applicable funding regulations as adhered to by
Lifeworks.

Education And Experience
High School Diploma or GED. Direct experience working with individuals diagnosed with intellectual and
developmental disabilities. Specific Competencies required to meet the support needs of the participant as
delineated in the Support Plan or Behavioral Intervention Plan.
Language Skills
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write
simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations
to staff, Individuals, and other employees of the organization.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to
perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions. Ability to
deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid certifications. If working with children and /or infants, will
need to be certified in child and infant CRP and First Aid. Valid and current driver’s license from the state
of residency.
VEHICLE/TRAVEL
Requires a legally insured and inspected automobile for use to be presented at work and available for use
during working hours. If the program has an agency vehicle, staff are expected to drive it as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may

- To empower people with developmental disabilities and their families to speak out for themselves and others, initiate ideas, have choices and make decisions about needed services.
- To provide support services to families in a way that recognizes and respects their ethnic and cultural diversity.
- Protects and enhances the rights of participants. Promotes the perception of individuals as capable, valued and accepted members of the community through the promotion of physical and social integration.
- To attend training as prescribed by Director (varies according to experience and background).
- To report suspicions of neglect or abuse to program management staff and Department of Children and Families or Disabled Persons Protection Commission.
- Be knowledgeable about what to do in an emergency and to file incident reports when needed.
- Teaching and fostering acquisition, retention or improvement of skills including but not limited to:
- health and nutrition, shopping, personal finance,
- use of community resources,
- community and personal safety skills and
- other adaptive and social skills to live in the community.
- Implementation of goals as outlined in Plan of Care/Family Support Plan/Behavioral Support Plan
- Service delivery may take place in a personal home, one’s own home, in a family home or in the
- Provide written progress notes as needed or requested by Family Support Staff
- Implementation of behavioral strategies and protocols
- Assistance with personal care as needed
