As a key member of the finance team, the Controller plays a vital role in supporting LifeStream’s mission-driven work by safeguarding the financial health of the organization.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
- Oversee and manage all general accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger.
- Prepare timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit financial reporting requirements.
- Lead the annual audit process and serve as the primary liaison with external auditors.
- Collaborate with the CFO and leadership team to develop the annual operating budget.
- Monitor budget performance and provide variance analysis and recommendations.
- Support grant budgeting, tracking, and reporting in coordination with program teams.
- Maintain and improve internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws related to nonprofit finances, including IRS and funder reporting.
- Oversee accurate and timely filing of tax and regulatory documents (e.g., IRS Form 990, MA filings).
- Supervise finance staff and support professional development and cross-training within the team.
- Partner with departments across the organization to strengthen financial literacy and ensure effective use of resources.
- Promote a culture of accountability, transparency, and continuous learning aligned with LifeStream’s values.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; MBA preferred.
- Minimum of 5–7 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a leadership role.
- Nonprofit financial management experience strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of fund accounting, grant management, and government contract compliance.
- Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite; experience with systems such as Sage Intacct, QuickBooks, or similar is a plus.
