- JOB TITLE: Nurse Midwife
- GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Responsible for providing care and education to obstetrical and gynecological patients in accordance with established midwifery practice guidelines.
- SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to the lead physician.
- SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None.
- ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Performs the nursing duties related to midwifery, including patient care and patient/family education.
2. Serves as Ob/Gyn team member working closely with Obstetric physicians and other staff to ensure healthy pregnancies and deliveries.
3. Oversees the medical care of assigned pregnant patients under the supervision of a physician.
4. Delivers infant and performs postpartum examinations and treatments to ensure that patient and infant are responding normally.
5. Teaches parents about elements of mother-baby bonding, protecting from inadequate heat, overstimulation, noisy/brightly lit environments, cuddling/hugging, and recognizing signs of infant pain/discomfort. 6. Perform administrative duties such as patient charting.
7. Follows established office policies, procedures, and objectives; continuous quality improvement objectives; and safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards.
8. Maybe required to work on-call or on a continuous roster on a 24-hour, 7-day basis.
9. Ensures strict confidentiality of patient records.
10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
The job holder must demonstrate competencies applicable to the job position.
EDUCATION: RN degree, successful completion of a nurse midwifery program accredited by the American College of Nurse Midwives.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of two years' experience as an RN; one year's experience as a midwife.
REQUIREMENTS: Current state RN license. Certification by the state as a Certified Nurse Midwife. Certification by ACNM, including meeting recommended ACNM continuing competency requirements.
KNOWLEDGE:
1. Knowledge of nurse midwifery principles and techniques.
2. Knowledge of methods ensuring a safe working environment for patient, family, and staff, including using appropriate personal protection equipment.
3. Knowledge of theories of family dynamics, mother-child attachment, parenting, and adult learning concepts.
SKILLS:
1. Skill in midwifery through appropriate coaching during pregnancy and delivery.
2. Skill in showing parents how to use distraction techniques (bottle and pacifier) to calm baby, deal with sibling rivalry, and practice effective parenting techniques.
3. Skill in showing other staff how to best help pregnant/postpartum women by effective teaching of principles and methods.

3. Ability to participate effectively as a team member by supporting change, decisions, and other staff, and by managing conflict appropriately.
ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS:
Combination of office, exam, and birthing rooms. Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a clinic environment.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:
Varied activities including sitting, standing, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting. Requires a full range of body motion, including manual finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 20 pounds. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
