Position Summary

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides skilled nursing care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and/or Director of Nursing to patients within the Brain Health Unit (BHU). The LPN utilizes nursing knowledge, assessment skills, and clinical judgment to support individualized care plans while promoting patient safety, dignity, and recovery.

The Brain Health Unit is an 80-bed specialized program that cares for patients with both medical and behavioral health needs. LPNs on the unit work closely with an interdisciplinary team to provide compassionate, relationship-based care in a structured therapeutic environment.

The Brain Health Unit provides specialized care for patients with complex medical and behavioral health needs. Patients often benefit from longer lengths of stay, allowing caregivers to develop meaningful therapeutic relationships and actively participate in each patient's recovery journey.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Deliver safe, compassionate, and evidence-based nursing care to patients within the Brain Health Unit.
  • Conduct ongoing patient assessments and collect relevant clinical information.
  • Administer medications, treatments, and procedures in accordance with physician orders and nursing standards.
  • Monitor patient conditions, behaviors, and responses to treatment and promptly communicate significant changes to the interdisciplinary team.
  • Assist in developing, implementing, and evaluating individualized care plans.
  • Support therapeutic interventions and rehabilitation goals.
  • Promote a safe, structured, and therapeutic environment for patients and staff.
  • Collaborate with physicians, psychiatrists, therapists, social workers, and nursing colleagues to optimize patient outcomes.
  • Accurately document patient care, observations, and interventions within the electronic medical record.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary care planning, unit meetings, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Educate patients and families regarding treatment plans, medications, and available resources.
  • Support daily unit operations and assume shift leadership responsibilities as assigned.
  • Work every other weekend as required.

Qualifications

Education

  • Graduate of an accredited Practical Nursing Program required.

Experience

  • Previous behavioral health, psychiatric, long-term care, rehabilitation, or skilled nursing experience preferred.
  • New graduates are encouraged to apply.

Licensure & Certifications

  • Current Maryland Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) License required.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association required.

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
