As a Direct Support Specialist, you will play a vital role in empowering individuals with developmental and cognitive disabilities to live fulfilling, independent lives. Your energetic and compassionate approach will help facilitate daily activities, promote positive behavior, and support overall well-being. This paid position offers an exciting opportunity to make a direct impact while developing valuable skills in caregiving, behavioral health, and community support.
Responsibilities
- Assist individuals with activities of daily living (ADLs), including personal hygiene, dressing, and feeding.
- Support behavioral health needs through positive behavior management strategies and intervention techniques.
- Facilitate communication using methods such as American Sign Language or other augmentative communication tools when applicable.
- Collect data related to individual progress, behavior patterns, and service outcomes for documentation and reporting purposes.
- Drive clients to appointments, community outings, or activities safely and responsibly.
- Administer medication as prescribed following proper protocols and documentation procedures.
- Collaborate with families, caregivers, and team members to develop personalized care plans that promote independence and community integration.
Skills
- Experience working with individuals with autism, neurodevelopmental disorders, or developmental disabilities.
- Knowledge of special education principles and behavioral health practices.
- Proficiency in American Sign Language is a plus for effective communication.
- Strong understanding of behavior management techniques and caregiving strategies.
- Background in home and community care environments preferred.
- Ability to assist with ADLs and support patients with cognitive disabilities compassionately.
- Excellent communication skills for engaging with clients, families, and team members.
- Valid driver’s license with the ability to drive safely in various settings.
- Experience in data collection, social work practices, or medication administration is advantageous.
