This position is located in the Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection. Regulatory Investigations Section responsible for investigating regulatory and consumer complaints, allegations and/or incidents of licensure violations.
The incumbent of this position serves as Investigator responsible for investigating allegations and/or incidents of violations of the District of Columbia Consumer Protection Procedures Act (CPPA) and other local and federal consumer protection statues.
Duties and Responsibilities
Conducts investigations of allegations and/or incidents of violations of the District of Columbia Consumer Protection Procedures Act (CPPA) and other local and federal consumer protection statues. Investigates unusual incidents and allegations of unfair business practices and inappropriate actions or conduct by companies and businesses located in the District. Analyzes complaints and correspondence from business and consumers to determine the most effective manner for developing and carrying out an investigation. Applies substantive skill in resolving conflicts related facts and evidence. Researches and gathers facts related to consumer complaints and allegations of unfair trade practices, unethical and/or unprofessional business practices and unlicensed business activities pertaining to business, occupational and professional licensure, corporation, and consumer protection statutes. Participates in the development of new policies, procedures, approaches and/or the refinement of established investigation processes. Provides informal advice or training to department heads, administrations, contractors and other personnel relative to investigation policies, procedure, and practices pertaining to a variety of consumer protection matters.
Qualifications and Education
Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the CS-9 grade level, or its non-District equivalent gained from the public or private sector. Specialized experience is work that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Examples of specialized experience include work investigating businesses to ensure compliance with appropriate laws and statues; work that required the skill and knowledge of consumer protection laws, civil and/or criminal laws; or performance of similar investigative work.
Licenses and Certifications
The incumbent must possess a valid driver’s license. (Proof of valid driver’s permit is required).
Working Conditions/Environment
Work is typically in a controlled environment and involves some exposure to moderate risk of accidents and requires following basic safety precautions. Occasional extended hours or after-hours and weekend investigations may be required.
