Description

The Technician/Instructor is a frontline professional responsible for the direct delivery of technology education programs and hands-on patron assistance across the Technology Library's makerspace, telehealth, and workforce development service areas.

This position instructs patrons of all ages in the safe and productive use of 3-D printers, laser cutters, virtual reality systems, and simulation equipment, while also facilitating telehealth navigation services and workforce development workshops. Technician/Instructors embody the library's commitment to accessible, equitable technology education and serve as trusted guides for the community's exploration of transformative technologies.

Essential Job Functions

  • Provides direct support for Technology Library staff and/or volunteers.
  • Facilitates scheduled and drop-in classes and workshops in 3-D printing, including design fundamentals, printer operation, filament and resin handling, print monitoring, troubleshooting, and post-processing.
  • Instructs patrons in the safe setup and operation of laser cutters and engravers, including design file preparation, material selection, machine calibration, and maintenance of all applicable safety protocols.
  • Guides patrons through virtual reality experiences; facilitates structured VR learning sessions for varied age groups; provides basic troubleshooting for patron-level hardware and software issues.
  • Operates and supports flight and driver education simulator sessions; delivers structured instructional content aligned with curriculum developed by the Program Manager; adjusts facilitation for patron age and experience level.
  • Delivers workforce development workshops covering resume writing, online job search strategies, job application tools, LinkedIn and professional profile development, digital workplace software, and interview preparation techniques.
  • Assists patrons in identifying and accessing online training, certification programs, and continuing education resources aligned with regional job market demand.
  • Enforces all facility safety rules, equipment acceptable use policies, and patron conduct standards within makerspace areas; immediately report equipment malfunctions, safety incidents, or patron concerns to appropriate supervisors.
  • Assists patrons in translating creative ideas into executable digital fabrication files; provide guidance on design tools, material choices, and project feasibility.
  • Prepares program and classroom spaces prior to each session and restores all areas to operational order following sessions.
  • Performs routine pre-session and post-session equipment checks, cleaning, and first-level maintenance on all assigned makerspace equipment.
  • Provides feedback to the Library Manager on curriculum effectiveness, patron engagement, and instructional materials; recommends improvements based on direct patron interactions.
  • Assists with development and revision of instructional handouts, visual aids, step-by-step guides, and digital resources.
  • Stays current on technology developments relevant to assigned program areas through self-directed learning and county-provided professional development.
  • Assists the Lead Technology Specialist and Technical Lab Lead with routine equipment maintenance, inventory, and prompt reporting of technical issues.
  • Supports library-wide events, outreach activities, and public technology demonstrations as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned/necessary which are related, or logical in assignment to the position.

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Associate's Degree or two-year Technical Certificate in Education, Information Technology, Digital Media, Healthcare Administration, or a related field.

Experience: Two (2) years’ experience in instruction, tutoring, training, or hands-on technology facilitation in an educational, library, community, or workforce setting; or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training and/or experience as determined by Human Resources. Demonstrated hands-on experience with at least one makerspace technology (3-D printing, laser cutting, VR, simulation, or equivalent).

Miscellaneous

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Working knowledge of current 3-D printing processes (FDM required; resin preferred) and at least one slicing or 3-D modeling software application.
  • Working knowledge of laser cutting and engraving equipment operation and all associated safety requirements.
  • Familiarity with virtual reality hardware platforms and VR experience facilitation.
  • Basic familiarity with flight and/or driver simulation systems.
  • Understanding of workforce development topics including resume writing, digital job search tools, and digital workplace skills.
  • Strong instructional and facilitation skills; ability to explain technical concepts clearly and engagingly to learners of varied ages and abilities.
  • Patient, empathetic, and effective interpersonal communication skills when working with diverse patron populations.
  • Organizational skills for managing classroom setup, supply inventories, patron reservations, and program records.
  • Basic troubleshooting skills for common hardware and software issues in a makerspace environment.
  • Ability to instruct and simultaneously manage diverse groups of learners including children, teens, adults, and seniors.
  • Ability to remain calm, safety-conscious, and professional in a busy, high-activity public environment.
  • Ability to learn new technologies quickly and independently translate new skills into effective patron instruction.

Physical Demand Requirements

Physical Demand: Light

  • 20 pounds maximum lifting
  • Frequent (up to 2/3 of the work time) lifting, carrying up to 10 pounds
  • If less lifting is involved will require significant walking/standing
  • If mostly sitting is involved will require push/pull on arm or leg controls
  • Expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words or perceiving sound by ear.
  • Good eyesight for production or safety of self and others.
  • Physical agility is required in kneeling, bending, stooping, and reaching.
  • Required to have clear vision at distances of 20 inches or less.
