The Materials Handler position is located in the Logistics Division, of Integrated Support Services (ISS) Directorate, Office of Chief Operating Officer, of the Library of Congress (LOC). Responsibilities include: warehouse work receiving, moving, storing and delivering materials and supplies; erecting or dismantling office systems furniture, shelves, partitions, etc.; moving, arranging, and setting up furniture, rooms, and outdoor areas for public events; using hand tools and powered equipment; examining furniture and equipment for deterioration and damage; and cutting and installing carpet tiles. An incumbent reports to a Materials Handler Team Leader or Supervisor who provides general oral and written instructions. Work is normally conducted independently or as part of a team of Materials Handlers. The incumbent may be assigned to any team depending on work requirements. Completed work is reviewed for effectiveness in goal achievement and soundness of overall approach, conformance with controlling management policies, thoroughness, timeliness and quality of results. Incumbent may act independently if and when the supervisor, work leader or team leader is unavailable, making decisions using sound judgment and discretion. This occupation involves work in receiving and storing, for issue or shipment, and shipping a variety of bin and bulk supplies, materials, and equipment. Performance of the work requires a knowledge of the methods used in processing material into and out of the supply system, including the methods used in tallying types and quantities of items against receiving and shipping documents; skill in palletizing, stacking, and otherwise placing and arranging items to storage locations in consideration of their size, shape, weight, quantity, type, stock number, letter and number codes, and other storage factors; and an understanding of procedures to be followed in removing items from a storage area for shipment; or issue quantities, units of issue, and types of items shown in issue requests.
