Youth Act Peer Advocate Position Summary:    

The Youth Assertive Community Treatment (Youth ACT) Peer Advocate provides mentorship, advocacy, and recovery-oriented support to youth with Serious Emotional Disturbance (SED) and their families, using lived experience to promote engagement, self-advocacy, and community integration. As part of a multidisciplinary team, the Peer Advocate delivers family-driven, youth-guided, trauma-informed services in home, school, and community settings in accordance with New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) Youth ACT guidelines.

Youth Act Peer Advocate Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide peer support, mentorship, advocacy, and engagement services to youth and families using recovery-oriented, strength-based approaches that promote resilience, self-advocacy, and family involvement.
  • Assist youth and caregivers in navigating behavioral health, educational, social service, and community support systems while connecting them to resources and natural supports.
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary Youth ACT team, community providers, and child-serving systems to support coordinated care, individualized treatment goals, and successful transitions across levels of care.
  • Deliver outreach, engagement, and peer support services in home, school, and community settings while participating in crisis support, stabilization, and community integration efforts.
  • Maintain timely, accurate documentation and participate in team meetings, supervision, required trainings, quality improvement, and fidelity monitoring activities.
  • Maintain confidentiality and compliance with OMH regulations, agency policies, ethical and professional standards, and perform other duties as assigned.

Youth Act Peer Advocate Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's or bachelor's degree in Human Services, Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, Education, or a related field preferred.
  • Must qualify as a Youth Peer Advocate by either having lived experience supporting a child, youth, or family member with behavioral health challenges, or being 18–30 years old with self-identified lived experience of mental health and/or co-occurring behavioral health challenges and be a Credentialed Family Peer Advocate (FPA), Youth Peer Advocate (YPA), or eligible to obtain required credentialing.
  • Minimum of one year of experience supporting children, adolescents, and families with behavioral health needs; experience in community-based services, Youth ACT, or similar programs preferred.
  • Current CANS-NY certification (or ability to obtain), completion of required OMH Youth ACT trainings, and knowledge of trauma-informed, recovery-oriented, family-driven, and youth-guided care principles.
  • Strong communication, advocacy, relationship-building, organizational, and documentation skills, with proficiency in electronic health records, Microsoft Office 365, and the ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Valid New York State driver's license, reliable transportation, and ability to travel throughout the community while maintaining professionalism, confidentiality, and cultural responsiveness.

Salary: $50,000 Annually
