Clinic Health Nurse - SYSTEMWIDE

Job Goal: To assist in providing services to schools that work toward the good health and wellness of students and the improvement of health conditions in general.

 Qualifications:

1. Minimum licensure is the possession of a current Registered Nurse (RN) License.
2. Current CPR for Healthcare Providers
3. Must meet the suitability criteria for employment and/ or certification/ licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act. No. 2002-457.
4. At least three (3) years of previous nursing experience is required. Experience in school nursing, pediatrics, or emergency nursing is preferred.
5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable

Supervisor(s): System Supervising Nurse for the School District & Principal

Background Check Required: (Ala. Code §§ 16-22A-5)- Upon offer of employment, employees will be required to submit legible fingerprints for a background review by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Background checks may not be more than ten (10) years old.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Knowledge of Board policies and procedures.
2. Effective written and oral communication skills.
3. Knowledge of current general medical and pediatric nursing practices.
4. Skilled in the use of testing and measurements for assessing vision, and other appropriate health screening activities and programs (i.e., Immunization Audits).
5. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, and school faculty.
6. Ability to use and implement computer technology programs including Microsoft Office and e-mail.
7. Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed in a fast-paced, high-intensity work environment.

Essential Functions:

1. Evaluates students who present themselves to the clinic for illness or injury.
2. Providing nursing care for students requiring special health procedures.
3. Assist teachers of special needs children with specific health needs.
4. Enforces the guidelines of the School District’s health policies.
5. Maintains an inventory of medical supplies, equipment, and medications.
6. Authorizes exclusion and re-admission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases in accordance with ADPH and CDC guidelines.
7. Maintaining proper and accurate documentation.
8. Contacting principal and System Supervising Nurse regarding crisis situations in the school. This includes child abuse, threatened suicide, and accidents.
9. Assisting students with medications according to approved procedures.
10. Administering first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures.
11. Adheres to state and LEA laws, policies, and procedures.
12. Assists/ conducts screening programs and school programs. (Spinal Screening, Vision Screening, and Immunization Audit).
13. Maintains confidentiality of information as required by school policy
14. Creates and follows individualized health care plans for students with chronic diseases
15. Communicates with parents/guardians, health care providers, and staff, as appropriate
16. Maintains and exhibits a high level of ethical and professional standards as expected of all personnel.
17. Takes leave time in accordance with Board policy and reports all absences according to Board procedures.
18. Performs other related and equitable duties as may be assigned.

• This position will be subject to the Students First Act of 2011. Madison City Schools reserves the right to fill this position by transfer of a qualified applicant who is already employed by Madison City Schools.  
• Under the Students First Act of 2011, no credit toward tenure or non-probationary status is earned in the initial school year of employment if the date of hire occurs after September 30.

Expected Employment: 187 days/8hrs. (full year)

Evaluation: Performance evaluation shall be in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy.

Salary Range: According to Madison City Schools Salary Schedule (Salary based on employment for complete year). New hires beginning in the 2023-2024 school year will only receive credit for full-time school nursing experience.
