Head Football Coach – Job Description
Position Summary:
The Head Football Coach is responsible for leading all aspects of the football program, including player development, practice planning, game strategy, staff supervision, and fostering a positive team culture. This position plays a critical role in building and sustaining a cohesive, competitive, and development-focused program across all levels.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Plan, organize, and conduct practices, training sessions, and team activities
- Provide instruction on fundamental and advanced football skills, including position-specific techniques, offensive and defensive systems, and special teams
- Oversee game preparation and execution, including scouting, game planning, staff coordination, and in-game adjustments
- Establish and promote a positive, competitive, and team-first culture aligned with the program’s values
- Build strong relationships with student-athletes while promoting accountability, discipline, and sportsmanship
- Lead player development by implementing systems for evaluation, feedback, and growth across all levels
- Supervise and evaluate assistant coaches; provide leadership and direction to the coaching staff
- Ensure proper supervision of student-athletes during practices, competitions, travel, and team events
- Communicate effectively with players, parents, coaching staff, administration, and community stakeholders regarding program expectations and updates
- Develop and maintain alignment across all program levels (freshman, sophomore, JV, varsity) to ensure consistency in philosophy and execution
- Oversee program operations such as equipment management, uniforms, budgeting, and facility coordination
- Support and participate in off-season training, camps, and strength and conditioning programs
- Ensure compliance with school, district, and state athletic association policies and guidelines
- Promote academic success and monitor student-athlete eligibility standards
- Support and engage in youth program development and community outreach to build program sustainability
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Prior football coaching experience required; head coaching experience preferred
- Demonstrated leadership and program-building ability
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to lead, manage, and collaborate with a coaching staff
- Commitment to teaching, mentoring, and developing student-athletes
- Knowledge of football systems, strategy, and player development at the high school level
- Availability for practices, games, off-season, and summer programming
