Position Summary
The Assistant Speech Coach supports the Head Speech Coach in developing and maintaining a successful speech program. The assistant coach works directly with students in individual and group speech events, helps prepare participants for competitions, supervises practices and events, and contributes to a positive, inclusive, and student-centered environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist the Head Speech Coach in planning and conducting practices, rehearsals, and workshops.
- Coach students in speech performance techniques, public speaking skills, interpretation events, and contest preparation.
- Provide individual and small-group instruction and feedback.
- Help students select, develop, revise, and rehearse contest materials.
- Assist with preparation for Iowa High School Speech Association (IHSSA) competitions and other speech events.
- Supervise students during practices, performances, competitions, and travel activities.
- Support tournament registration, scheduling, logistics, and event coordination.
- Monitor student participation and assist with maintaining eligibility requirements.
- Promote positive teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership, and personal growth.
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, and administration.
- Assist with recruiting and retaining student participants.
- Perform additional duties assigned by the Head Coach, Activities Director, or administration.
