This position will primarily provide support to Pre-K students. 

 

JOB SUMMARY

The Paraprofessional II- Special Education works with students in small groups on specific subjects and leads lesson plans. This position supports teaching personnel in the supervision and instruction of special education students in resource classrooms including assisting students with special health care needs and developing students’ daily living and behavioral skills while promoting a welcoming and positive learning environment where all students can thrive. To be successful in this role, the incumbent must demonstrate patience and the ability to remain calm and composed in stressful situations.

 

 

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

All positions require selected candidates to be fingerprinted and successfully pass a criminal background check. Additional minimum required qualifications for this position are:

  1. High school diploma or a recognized equivalent
  2. Per Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), interested applicants must be Highly Qualified to be considered for the position and have completed one of the following:
    • completed at least two years at an accredited higher education institution (minimum 48 semester hours), or
    • obtained an associates (or higher) degree from an accredited higher education institution, or
    • satisfied a rigorous state or local assessment (Parapro Assessment/PRAXIS ETS) with a score of 460 or higher

The higher education institution official transcripts, or college diploma, or a copy of the Paraprofessional Assessment must be provided with your application or upon a contingent offer of employment. Unofficial transcripts can be a placeholder until official transcripts are provided

  1. Hold or obtain CPR & First Aid Certificate within 2 months of hire
  2. Complete Safety Care Training
  3. Attend Annual Health Services Training
  4. Effective communication skills with both children and adults, including speaking, reading, writing, and understanding English; proficiency in grammar and punctuation
  5. Ability to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages, and ratios
  6. Experience using standard office equipment (e.g., phone, copier, fax, etc.) and Microsoft Office

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

These are examples of skills and experience that the best qualified candidates may have. Not having one or all of them does not disqualify any candidate from consideration.

  1. Experience in a K-12 education or public employment environment
  2. Spanish or other language proficiency, including ability to read, write, speak, and understand

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Under the direction of the teacher, assist and supervise students as they attend general education classes and provide support according to their Individualized Education Plan (IEP) needs; utilize knowledge of student’s IEP and concepts for Special Education learning to implement learning and behavior plans that meet students' social and behavioral interventions, health care plans, and ensure compliance with IEPs
  2. Work with students who may have mild to moderate behavioral and special health care needs. As needed, roll, push, pull, bend, reach, stoop, and lift up to 30 pounds
  3. Under the guidance of the teacher, use knowledge of age-appropriate activities and stages of child development to implement classroom management techniques, provide small group instruction to students within the classroom, and provide classroom interventions and a variety of activities (e.g., constructive play, behavior modification activities, etc.), while managing time effectively
  4. Administer assessment instruments under the direction of teachers; confer with teachers to assist in evaluating student progress and implement student objectives
  5. Collect student data as related to EIP, FBA/BIP or as directed by teacher
  6. Monitor individual or small groups of students in a variety of settings (e.g., classroom, library, playground activities, bus boarding and exiting, etc.). Operate physical education equipment and supervise playground activities using standardized methods
  7. Report incidents (e.g., fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) to maintain the personal safety of students and adhere to district policies, procedures and state law
  8. Administer first aid/CPR to students when necessary and adhere to safety practices
  9. Perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages, and ratios, read a variety of manuals, and write documents following prescribed formats
  10. Participate in various meetings and workshops as assigned to convey and gather information required to perform functions; present information to others; attend additional training opportunities as needed
  11. Independently interpret guidelines, maintain confidentiality, be attentive to detail, and adapt to changing work priorities and work with frequent interruptions, as required
  12. Support a team environment by collaborating with own and other work units to effectively perform duties
  13. Work under limited supervision; utilize time-management and prioritization strategies; accurately process detailed information; meet deadlines
  14. Maintain regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements efficiently and effectively
  15. Communicate effectively orally and in writing with diverse individuals and groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and building positive working relationships with employees and stakeholders
  16. Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit
