Job Title: CERTIFIED PHARMACY TECHNICIAN

Department: PHARMACY

Reports to: DIRECTOR OF PHARMACY

SUMMARY:

Under the direct supervision of the Pharmacist, pharmacy technicians perform assigned duties in support of the Pharmacy Department with an emphasis on accuracy, timeliness, and patient safety. They help promote the mission, vision, and values of the organization

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Certified Pharmacy Technicians duties may include the below listed functions:

• Manage hospital medication inventory, including ordering, stocking/organizing to prevent mispicks/medication errors, rotating stock to minimize expired products, proactively responding to drug shortages, maintaining appropriate stock levels of formulary medications and oversee the disposition of expired products.
• Manage Omnicell inventory, including accurate selection and loading of medications, organize stocks to maintain appropriate par levels, ensure removal of expired/damaged products in a timely manner, and resolve discrepancies.
• Maintain appropriate inventory records, including supplier invoices and Omnicell deliver/receive logs, as required by hospital policy and state and federal regulations.
• Prepacking and labelling unit and multiple dose packages and manage unit dose log records with the supervision of the pharmacist.
• Accurately prepare medications in accordance with the medication orders ensuring correct labeling of medication, precise mixing of ingredients, and documentation as required by state regulations.
• Prepare medication kits in the crash carts ensuring accuracy and completeness of each kit. Maintain adequate inventory of medications used in these kits, label appropriately, document expiration dates, and charge the department as indicated.
• Assists in performing yearly Controlled-Substance inventory and annual hospital-wide medication inventory.
• Record refrigerator temperatures daily, ensuring that medications are stored at appropriate temperatures. Maintain refrigerator temperature logs in the Medication Room as well as in the

Pharmacy per hospital policy.

• Does sterile compounding and dispensing sterile products and preparations of correct ingredient identity, purity (freedom from physical contaminants, such as precipitates, and chemical contaminants), strength (including stability and compatibility), and sterility and for dispensing them in appropriate containers that are labeled accurately and appropriately for the end user.
• Assists in the checking of Cerner charges against Omnicell removals of patients in the 2West and

Emergency Room.

• Communicates with nurses, respiratory techs and their immediate supervisor should there be discrepancies in the Cerner charges against the Omnicell removals.
• Must be accountable for the consequences of erroneous judgment, decisions and mistakes in techniques which could result in the dispensing of improper medications, causing severe patient harm or subjecting the hospital to liability

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. High School diploma or GED

2. Ability to organize delegate tasks and operate with supervision as needed.

3. Ability to type up to 45 wpm.

4. Must have completed the qualifications of a Certified Pharmacy Technician

5. Must deal with people in a positive and supportive manner

6. Must be able to make decisions and to function under pressure

7. Computer skills

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Physically the certified pharmacy technician stands much of the time and works, reaches, lifts, etc.
• The ability to concentrate on the task at hand is needed to insure accurate filling of prescriptions
• They must be able to work with accelerated speed and under stress when the work load demands
• Must be able to work under the Laminar IV Hood and use sterile technique while preparing IV mixtures for the patients
• Walking and pushing a medication cart is required for delivery of medications, IV’s floor stock and crash carts
• Manual dexterity is required for opening and closing bottles
• Must be able to lift forty (25) pounds

MACHINE, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT AND WORK AIDS: Needles, syringes, manufacturing pumps, infusion pumps, typewriters, calculators, telephones, Laminar IV Hood, Computer, Omnicell Console and Omnicell.

Pay: $15.00 - $18.00 per hour
