Job Summary

The Substance Abuse Clinician will provide professional clinical services to clients with substance use disorders (alcohol and other drugs) and often co-occurring mental health conditions. The role will include assessment, treatment planning, individual/group therapy, case management, documentation, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to promote client recovery, wellness, and long-term stability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of clients with alcohol and/or drug use disorders, including screening, intake, biopsychosocial evaluation, risk assessment, and identification of co-occurring mental health conditions.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans, goals and objectives in collaboration with clients, aligning with evidence-based practices and program protocols.
  • Provide individual counseling, group therapy, family support/education, relapse-prevention planning, and appropriate psychoeducation on addiction and recovery processes.
  • Monitor and evaluate client progress, adjust treatment plans as needed, coordinate aftercare and follow-up services.
  • Facilitate or support relapse prevention groups, life-skills development, coping-skills training, and recovery maintenance.
  • Manage case coordination: liaise with internal staff (e.g., peer-support specialists, MAT providers) and external agencies (healthcare, social services, legal/probation) to ensure comprehensive care.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, confidential documentation in compliance with agency policies, state/federal regulations (e.g., HIPAA), and quality assurance frameworks.
  • Participate in team meetings, clinical supervision, staff trainings, professional development, and program evaluation/quality improvement activities.
  • Provide advocacy and support for clients in accessing resources, benefits, housing, employment, community supports.
  • Promote client-centered, culturally competent, trauma-informed care; support a recovery-oriented environment.
  • Master’s degree (preferred) in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Human Services or a related behavioral health field. Bachelor’s degree may be acceptable depending on scope of role and certification/licensure.
  • Current licensure in West Virginia as a clinician (for example, Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), or equivalent) as required by role.
  • Certification or eligibility in West Virginia as an Alcohol & Drug Counselor (ADC) or Advanced Alcohol & Drug Counselor (AADC) through the West Virginia Certification Board for Addiction & Prevention Professionals (WVCBAPP).
  • Significant experience (e.g., 2 years) providing addiction counseling, preferably in outpatient/IOP/residential SUD treatment settings; experience with co-occurring disorders is a plus.
  • Demonstrated competency in individual and group therapy, treatment planning, case management, crisis intervention, documentation, and collaboration in multidisciplinary settings.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based treatment modalities (e.g., Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, relapse prevention, trauma‐informed care).
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, organization, and documentation skills; ability to engage clients in recovery, maintain boundaries, manage caseloads, work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Attributes

  • Experience working in rural or underserved communities (West Virginia/mountain region) a plus.
  • Prior work in integrated SUD and behavioral health care, including familiarity with MAT (medication assisted treatment) and co‐occurring conditions.
  • Demonstrated commitment to recovery-oriented practice, peer involvement, and client empowerment.
  • Flexibility, resilience, strong ethical standards and positive attitude toward teamwork and continuous improvement.

Certifications & Licensure (WV Specific)

  • Active clinician license in WV (LPC, LCSW, etc.) if required for clinical role.
  • Certified ADC or AADC via WVCBAPP—West Virginia’s credentialing body for alcohol and drug counselors.
  • Must maintain continuing education and adhere to ethical and professional standards.
  • Background check, drug screening, valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle (if travel is required) may be required.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

  • Work is primarily in outpatient/IOP treatment setting, may include community-based outreach, occasional travel to partner agencies.
  • Some evening or weekend hours may be required depending on program schedule.
  • Frequent interaction with clients experiencing high stress, crisis, relapse; ability to de-escalate and respond appropriately is required.
  • Standard office/computer work (documentation in EHR), plus direct clinical interaction.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Compensation will be commensurate with education, licensure, certification, and experience.
  • Benefits may include health insurance, dental/vision, retirement 401(k) matching, paid time off, continuing education support, supervision and professional development (consistent with other postings at the organization).

Salary: $45,000 - $60,000/ Year

$5,000 Sign on bonus.
