Summary:
The Senior Engineer, In-Line Vision Systems is an ESMI-based engineer responsible for providing specialized vision-inspection engineering support to LG Energy Solution and affiliated manufacturing entities throughout North America.

This position supports the setup, integration, commissioning, acceptance testing, production startup, stabilization, troubleshooting, and optimization of in-line vision inspection systems used in lithium-ion battery manufacturing. The Engineer serves as a technical expert in pouch-cell packaging inspection, inspection-recipe development, camera and lighting configuration, image-quality optimization, defect-detection validation, and deep-learning-based inspection technologies.

The Engineer travels to North American manufacturing sites to support new production-line launches, improve inspection accuracy and reliability, reduce false rejects and false accepts, resolve complex vision-system problems, and transfer specialized knowledge to locally hired engineers and technicians

Responsibilities:

  • Provide advanced vision-system engineering support to ESMI and other LG Energy Solution or affiliated North American manufacturing entities.
  • Lead or support the installation, setup, configuration, integration, commissioning, and production stabilization of in-line vision inspection systems.
  • Develop, configure, validate, and optimize inspection recipes for pouch-cell packaging, dimensional, cosmetic, sealing, contamination, and other battery-manufacturing inspections.
  • Configure and optimize cameras, lenses, lighting, triggers, image-acquisition parameters, and inspection environments to achieve consistent image quality.
  • Establish and validate inspection standards, defect criteria, detection thresholds, measurement tolerances, and pass/fail decision logic.
  • Conduct detection-performance studies and validation testing to confirm inspection accuracy, repeatability, reliability, and production readiness.
  • Analyze and reduce false rejects and false accepts through recipe tuning, image analysis, hardware optimization, and defect-standard validation.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex issues involving vision software, inspection algorithms, cameras, lenses, lighting, sensors, triggers, image acquisition, equipment interfaces, and inspection environments.
  • Develop defect datasets and train, validate, deploy, and maintain deep-learning models for scratches, contamination, wrinkles, sealing defects, cosmetic defects, and other inspection applications.
  • Support the integration and deployment of vision inspection software, inspection algorithms, measurement functions, and automated production equipment.
  • Perform Factory Acceptance Testing and Site Acceptance Testing and document inspection performance, open issues, corrective actions, and acceptance results.
  • Support new plant launches, trial production, production ramp-up, model changeovers, and mass-production stabilization.
  • Analyze inspection failures, recurring defects, quality escapes, and production interruptions; conduct root-cause analysis and implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Standardize vision hardware, inspection recipes, defect criteria, operating procedures, and validation methods across supported North American manufacturing sites.
  • Develop and maintain inspection specifications, recipe records, validation reports, troubleshooting histories, defect libraries, operating standards, and training materials.
  • Coordinate technical activities with manufacturing, quality, process engineering, equipment engineering, IT, equipment suppliers, contractors, and vision-development teams across multiple entities.
  • Manage project schedules, technical resources, installation activities, inspection deliverables, and production-readiness requirements when assigned as a project lead.
  • Train locally hired engineers, technicians, operators, and quality personnel on vision-system operation, recipe management, troubleshooting, inspection validation, and deep-learning model administration.
  • Provide on-site support during critical inspection failures, quality incidents, production disruptions, and other urgent manufacturing events.
  • Travel frequently to manufacturing facilities throughout North America based on project and operational requirements.

Required Skills:

  • Advanced knowledge of automated in-line vision inspection systems used in lithium-ion battery manufacturing or comparable high-volume manufacturing environments.
  • Strong experience with vision-system setup, commissioning, production startup, troubleshooting, and stabilization.
  • Advanced inspection-recipe development, tuning, optimization, and validation skills.
  • Ability to configure and optimize industrial cameras, lenses, lighting, triggers, image-acquisition parameters, and inspection environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish defect criteria, detection thresholds, measurement tolerances, and inspection decision logic.
  • Experience analyzing and reducing false rejects and false accepts while maintaining required defect-detection performance.
  • Strong knowledge of image processing, defect detection, dimensional measurement, alignment, and automated visual-inspection principles.
  • Experience developing defect datasets and training, validating, deploying, or administering deep-learning vision models.
  • Ability to troubleshoot vision software, hardware, network communication, equipment interfaces, image-quality, and inspection-environment issues.
  • Experience performing Factory Acceptance Testing, Site Acceptance Testing, inspection capability studies, and production-readiness validation.
  • Strong root-cause analysis, corrective-action, quality-stabilization, and continuous-improvement capabilities.
  • Ability to develop inspection specifications, validation reports, operating standards, technical documentation, and training materials.
  • Strong project coordination and hands-on technical training skills.
  • Ability to transfer specialized vision-system knowledge to local engineers, technicians, operators, and quality personnel.
  • Ability to work effectively across multiple manufacturing sites, corporate entities, cultures, and technical functions.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, electronics engineering, information and communication engineering, automation engineering, or a related technical field required.
  • At least 7 years of progressively responsible experience in machine vision, automated inspection, vision software, imaging systems, or related manufacturing-engineering functions.
  • Demonstrated experience with vision-system setup, commissioning, recipe development, troubleshooting, and production stabilization.
  • Experience supporting automated in-line inspection systems in lithium-ion battery, display, semiconductor, automotive, electronics, or another high-volume manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated experience configuring industrial cameras, lenses, lighting, image-acquisition conditions, and inspection software.
  • Experience performing inspection-performance validation and reducing false rejects and false accepts.
