What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Food Services position at Lexington Rescue Mission Inc?

The Director of Food Services is responsible for the seamless delivery of community meals by managing the staff and volunteers who prepare and serve meals, ensuring the mission has a sufficient inventory of food and supplies, planning healthy and hearty menus, making use of donated items, overseeing needed maintenance of dining room, serve line, and kitchen appliances and equipment, and collaborating with the food services team to provide the highest quality service to our guests and volunteers. This person will foster a warm, welcoming, and Christ-centered environment for our meal guests as well as the volunteers and staff who assist with community meals


RESPONSIBILITIES:


Oversight of community meals:

  1. The Lexington Rescue Mission provides free community meals Monday through Saturday for breakfast and lunch. This position oversees the execution of these meals to ensure the meal program meets its goal of improving food security for hungry people.
  2. Manage food service staff, including a full-time Kitchen Manager and a part-time Kitchen Assistant, according to management policies and procedures. This includes recruiting, hiring, training, supervising, disciplining, and terminating staff as well as conducting weekly team meetings, and one-on-one meetings.
  3. Manage food service volunteers, including orientation and training, assigning volunteer roles, and providing coaching to ensure they follow mission guidelines and food safety procedures.
  4. Build and maintain strong teams of volunteers that cultivate a warm, welcoming, and Christ-centered environment for our guests. Oversee volunteer scheduling, maintain contact with volunteers, and ensure appropriate coverage for each shift, including handling coverage for volunteer absences.
  5. Plan and publish the weekly menu and share it with food service staff, volunteers, and guests.
  6. Ensure compliance with all applicable food safety and sanitation standards.
  7. Cover staff and volunteer duties in the kitchen and dining room as needed.
  8. Build pathways for meal guests to integrate into other mission services that can help them take steps out of poverty and monitor how effectively clients are connected to these other services.
  9. Conduct surveys of guests to gauge their satisfaction and solicit feedback.


Procure all food and related supplies for mission food services:

This position is responsible for maximizing the use of donated food and supplies and minimizing

purchasing costs while not sacrificing food safety or the quality of the meals and snacks provided. This includes food and supplies for:

  • Community meals
  • Meals and snacks for other mission programs, including daily coffee and pastry service in the cafe, daily snacks for walk-in hours, weekly dinners for Steady Hands and Circles, and weekly lunches for mission tours.
  • Emergency food bags for mission guests.
  • Food supplies for the Lexington Rescue Mission’s three transitional living homes: The Potter’s House, House of Hope and Grace Place.
  • Annual special events, including the Community Thanksgiving Dinner, Christmas Dinner, Easter Dinner, Step into Wellness, and Walk for Warmth.
  • Meals and snacks for Board meetings, tours, donor meetings, and retreats.


Manage all food and food-related supplies and inventory by all applicable regulations, including the Health Department and Citygate Accreditation standards, to ensure the health and safety of all our guests.


Oversee maintenance and repair of food service equipment.


Ensure safety protocols are being upheld by OSHA, the Health Department, LRM policies and procedures, and Citygate Accreditation requirements.


Business Office Responsibilities

  1. Financial Oversight - Ensure food service is operating within the budget.
  2. Record monthly food service numbers in Mission Tracker.
  3. Complete Monthly Statics Report.
  4. Code invoices and purchases to the appropriate account.
  5. Administrative duties, as assigned.
  6. Creating schedules for staff and volunteers.


Other Responsibilities

1. Work with the Security Coordinator to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for guests and volunteers, including engaging with clients and diffusing conflict when it occurs in the dining room during meals.

2. Comply with all OSHA, Food Sanitation and Safety, Labor Laws, etc.

3. Ensure the dining room and restrooms are clean and presentable. Work with the Chief Operating Officer and the janitorial service to address issues as they arise.

4. Comply with Citygate Accreditation regulations.

5. Attends all 1:1, staff, and team meetings.

6. Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

• Associate of Arts in Food and Hospitality/Management or 3 years of Food Service Management experience

• Current Food Managers Certification

• Scratch cooking experience

• Experience working in a commercial kitchen


Knowledge:

• Must be familiar with OSHA and local health department rules and regulations.


Skills and Abilities:

• Ability to plan menus, purchase groceries and supplies in large quantities.

• Driving for the Mission business is required.

• Ability to multi-task.

• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

• Ability to pay attention to detail.

• Ability to use stove, oven, mixer, slicer, 3 compartment sink and other

equipment as needed.

• Ability to substitute donated ingredients into recipes while maintaining food

quality.

• Ability to lift 50 pounds.

• Ability to bend, twist, squat, lean over multiple times during a work shift and

stand up to 4 hours non-stop.

• Ability to read recipes and food preparation directions and to do basic math

calculations for recipes.
