Position Title:     1.0 FTE K-5 Health Education Teacher

 

Reports to:          Department Head/Principal

 

Terms of Employment:    184 day work year.  Benefits and salary in accordance with the LEA Unit A collective bargaining agreement.

 

The position has a travel component which requires teaching at two plus elementary schools in the district.

 

August 31, 2026 start date.  FY26 salary scale may change based on completed negotiations.

Position Responsibilities:

 

Planning and Preparation

  • Meets and instructs grade K-5 students during assigned class time and in the locations and at designated times.  
  • Collaborates with special educators, Evaluation Team Supervisors, and English Learner educators to schedule, plan, and deliver instruction appropriate to students who are unable to access the Tier 1 classroom Health instruction.
  • Plans a program of study that aligns with the Massachusetts Comprehensive Health and PE Frameworks, and meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of the students to the extent possible.
  • Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor: develops lesson plans and instructional materials, prepares modifications and accommodations to engage all students and differentiate instruction appropriately.
  • Reviews student IEP, 504, and Cumulative File documents and adjusts instruction as needed.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.

Safe, Supportive Learning Environment

  • Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students; encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Communicate positively and proactively with parents/guardians, through conferences and other means to support student growth

Effective Instruction and Assessment

  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals, and establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units and projects to communicate these objectives to students.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
  • Teach using a variety of engagement strategies, and provide appropriate differentiation and accommodations to meet the needs of all students. 
  • Assesses the progress of students towards meeting educational standards regularly, and provides clear feedback to learners
  • Contribute to report cards and progress reports as required
  • Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms and as outlined in the collective bargaining agreement if applicable.
  • Work with Special Educators, English Learner Educators, and other staff as applicable to design and deliver modified instruction to students unable to access the general education Health class

Professional Culture

  • Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s) and, cooperatively with department heads and principals assists in the evaluation of their job performance.
  • Strives to maintain and improve professional competence through ongoing professional learning.
  • Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.
  • Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve challenges related to health and wellbeing
  • Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
  • Administers group standardized tests in accordance with the district testing program.
  • Participates in curriculum development programs as required.
  • Collaborates with the K-12 PE, Health & Wellness Prevention Specialists
  • All other duties as assigned.

 Job Qualifications:

 

Must hold MA DESE licensure Health Education licensure at the appropriate level

 

Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and possess a high level of capability with technology. 

 

Must be able to assist in the protection of students and school property, assist the principal in fire and other emergency drills as required by law and School Committee policy.
