Job Summary
The Activity Director (AD) assumes the leadership of the Activity Department. The AD assist with the development and implementation of an activity program designed to meet the activity needs and interests of each individual resident. The Activity Director works as a member of a team under the direction of the Administrator.
Education
A high school diploma is required. Must be qualified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist who is:
- Licensed or registered, if applicable by the State in which practicing; and
- Has two years of experience in a social or recreational program within the last five years, one of which was a full-time in patient activities program in a health care setting or
- Is a qualified Occupational Therapist or Occupational Therapy Assistant; or
- Has completed a training course approved by the State.
Qualifications
1. Must be able to read and write with good grammar skills.
2. Is self-motivated and able to take the initiative to complete duties as specified and directed by the Administrator.
3. Possesses a valid driver’s license.
4. Demonstrates leadership and managerial ability.
5. Has the ability to organize, plan and supervise the Activity Department.
6. Demonstrates the ability to lead the Activity Department in a cost effective professional manner.
7. Maintains effective interpersonal relationships and works well with the general public.
8. Is capable of implementing changes as determined by the Administrator.
9. Is of good emotional, mental and physical health having sound judgment and high professional standards.
10. Is courteous in working with residents, families and employees.
11. Maintains a neat, well-groomed and professional appearance at all times.
12. Has a desire to work with the geriatric clientele as well as residents of any age and their current prospective activity and interest needs.
13. Must be willing to be in and/or available to the community weekends as well as weekdays.
14. Must demonstrate ability to follow policies, procedures, practices and direction without the direct supervision of the Administrator.
15. Must demonstrate the ability to function as a cooperative team member with all disciplines in the community.
16. Must have a pre-employment and an annual Tuberculosis screening examination as required by the state the Activity Director is employed.
Responsibilities
The Activity Director works with the Administrator to assure the following responsibilities are accomplished. This list is only partial and should not be interpreted as a comprehensive inventory of all duties, tasks and responsibilities.
1. Completes activity assessments as assigned.
2. Identify problems/needs of residents and develop an activity plan for each individual resident.
3. Participates in resident care plan conferences
4. Has a working knowledge of resident’s rights and is an advocate for the resident.
5. Has a working knowledge of policies within the Activity Department and throughout the community and abides by these policies.
6. Completes documentation in a timely and professional manner.
7. Communicates with Department Heads and other staff when necessary to ensure full implementation of activity program.
8. Keeps confidential any and all information regarding the residents personal and clinical records.
9. Provides assistance to the Resident’s Council as requested.
10. Assists the residents in transporting to and from activities as needed.
11. Conducts both group and one-on-one activities with residents,
12. Provides supervision of Volunteers.
13. Assist residents with personal shopping
14. Participates in the community-oriented events and special marketing projects as requested by the Administrator.
15. Recruits, trains and orients volunteers.
16. Maintains confidentiality, adhering to established policies and confidentiality in regards to residents, employees and family members.
17. Keeps supplies organized in the Activity Department.
18. Coordinates activity fundraisers.
19. Provides assistance to residents for individual projects and supervision of the activity room while residents are present and working on projects.
20. Produces and post the monthly activity calendar.
21. Delivers mail to residents and keeps confidential the content of mail that is opened for residents at the residents request.
22. Decorates the community for seasonal functions.
23. Promotes effective work relationships with the administrator, medical staff, personnel, volunteers, agencies and management staff affiliated with the community.
24. Participates in Quality Assessment and Improvement Program.
25. Reports immediately to supervisor and administrator situations involving abuse, neglect or suspicion of a crime.
26. Adheres to the Code of Conduct, Compliance Program, HIPAA Standard and Computer Usage Agreement.
