What are the responsibilities and job description for the Visitor Services Associate position at Lexington History Museums?
Visitor Services: The museum’s Visitor Services department is the face of the organization, as the visitor services team is often the first and last to interact with guests during their visit to LHM. In recent years attendance has grown, especially during the weekend, necessitating more staff to assist with the visitor experience and flow.
Role: The Visitor Services Associate will report to the Director of Visitor Services and will be responsible for welcoming guests, tracking visitation numbers, admissions sales, gift shop sales, and restocking shop items. The primary work locations will be at Buckman Tavern and the Lexington Depot; occasional duties will be performed at the Hancock-Clarke House and Munroe Tavern, as back-up to our Volunteer Historic House Greeters program.
Requirements:
- A passion for people, museums, and American history
- Minimum 1 year experience in a visitor-facing role at a comparable organization
- Experience in hospitality, retail, attractions, or cultural organizations preferred
- High school diploma required; relevant coursework from an accredited college or university strongly preferred and/or equivalent experience
- Knowledge of admissions, POS, and online ticketing systems
- Ability to identify and positively resolve visitor issues in the moment; strong decision making skills necessary
- Must be able to work weekends, holidays, and special events as necessary
- General knowledge of information technology and business software applications; must be highly proficient using Microsoft Office Suite
- Effective and persuasive communications skills; able to speak clearly and present information to a wide variety of audiences
- Must be able to stand and move around public areas of the museum for extended periods of time
Responsibilities: The Visitor Services Associate will:
- Greet and welcome all visitors
- Assist in the daily operations of the admissions desk with a focus on customer service
- Initiate and complete sales transactions with visitors. This includes greeting each customer; assisting with selections; suggestive selling; order coordination; cash, checks, and credit card transactions; and thanking the guest.
- Ensure that the Museum store is neat, orderly, and well stocked at all times
- Develop a strong understanding of the museums' topics, stories, and collections in order to better answer guest questions.
- Become familiar with and understand Museum store products in order to sell them and answer customer questions
- Sell memberships
- Work in tandem with Education staff to welcome group tours and process group tour payments
- Staff the front desk and events including weekends and some evenings and holidays
- Answer the telephone and fields calls to appropriate staff members
Optional Opportunities: If interested, the Visitor Services Associate can receive training to
Lead historical tour and school tour programs
Assist Visitor Services operations at other LHM events, lectures and programs
Payment and Schedule: $16.50. per hour. During the peak season of April-October, Visitor Services Associates are expected to commit to 20-25 hours per week, with flexible availability, with weekend and holiday shifts expected on a regular basis. This position is subject to seasonal changes in volume of visitors and events. Limited hours are available during November-March.
