ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Under close supervision, acts as a team member to develop and implement the County’s noxious weed control- management program for the Lewis County Noxious Weed Control Board.

The following duties are the fundamental, crucial job duties performed by this position. This is not a comprehensive list of all tasks that may be assigned. Incumbent may be required to perform other duties as assigned and appropriate for the position.
  • Conduct field surveys to identify, document, and map noxious weed infestations, utilizing agency vehicles and GIS software in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Maintain and file complete and accurate records for field activities, utilizing Microsoft Office suite & other required software.
  • Assist and participate in weed control activities, primarily including manual or mechanical removal, but other methods may be required as necessary.
  • Respond to information requests, noxious weed reports, and complaints from residents and landowners in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Provide information to the public about noxious weed control projects, including responding to requests by email and phone.
  • Assist with managing weed program outreach display materials, activities and educational events.
  • Work with municipal and public agency staff, as well as private contractors, to achieve control of noxious weeds on public lands.
  • Support weed management efforts by working with volunteer and landowner groups.
  • Perform job duties in compliance with laws, rules, regulations, and other standards.
  • Represent the County to the public, as well as private organizations and schools, on weed reduction issues.


WORKING ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work is performed in a standard office environment as well as outdoors at off-site field environments with exposure to inclement weather, safety hazards, traffic, power tools, and other equipment; work involves moderate physical demands and must possess strength sufficient to lift items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Graduate or GED Certificate.
  • A valid Driver’s License is required.


COMPETENCIES (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Behaviors)

Knowledge of:
  • Washington State Noxious Weed Control Law and other local, state and federal laws and regulations that relate to noxious weed control activities in Lewis County.
  • Integrated pest management and weed control methods, including impacts from invasive plants.
  • Field equipment, including safe operation and field maintenance of equipment such as hand tools, brush cutters, backpacks, and power sprayers.
  • Ecological or agricultural theory, systems, and practices.
Skills in:
  • Maintaining accurate records & data entry.
  • Operating a personal computer utilizing standard and specialized software.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers.
  • Communicating effectively and following verbal and written instructions.
  • Effective communication with private landowners and other members of the public, as well as related conflict de-escalation techniques.
  • Working independently and as part of a team with diverse backgrounds and coordinating with others to facilitate teamwork and program objectives.
  • Maintaining safety while working in potentially hazardous conditions.
  • Navigating forested backroads and operating four-wheel-drive vehicles in suboptimal conditions.
  • Identifying noxious weeds, native plants, and common ornamental plants in Washington State.
