OVERVIEW  

Under regular supervision safely drives bus/van to transport children and staff to and from designated locations and activities.

KEY FUNCTIONS

  • Obeys all traffic signals and laws that govern the operation of buses; uses precautions necessary to avoid accidents
  • Instructs passengers in safety precautions and practices
  • Inspects and maintains cleanliness and maintenance of bus/van on a daily basis (water, gas, oil, and mechanical) 
  • Maintains operational records; assures bus meets maintenance schedules
  • Reports mechanical problems immediately to appropriate personnel
  • All other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of all current motor and pedestrian laws and safe driving techniques
  • Map reading skills 
  • Ability to operate a bus in a safe and economical manner
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and check repair work
  • Must be reliable, dependable, professional and trustworthy  
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills 
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and or/ability required.   • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred 
  • Ability to be a qualified driver per DOT regulations: Holds a current / Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a P and S endorsement and current medical certificate, Clearinghouse consent form/account, passed DOT drug test
  • Must possess and maintain a safe driving record
  • Previous bus or other heavy duty vehicle driving experience preferred
  • Successful completion of Defensive Driving Course (DDC) preferred
  • Current CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse prevention training; will train

REPORTING TO THIS POSITION  

No supervisory responsibilities 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work is typically performed sitting for extended periods of time; however, standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, climbing stairs to enter and exit vehicle, and lifting equipment and objects weighing up to twenty-five pounds is required on an intermittent basis. Requires normal range of motor skills, hearing and eyesight. Daily exposure to inconsistent weather conditions such as sun, heat, or rain.
