Leonard Workforce Solutions is conducting a confidential search on behalf of an engineering organization developing advanced optical metrology systems used in high performance optical instrumentation and space systems. This role is based in Tucson Arizona and is fully onsite. The organization designs and builds custom optical test systems used to measure and validate advanced optical technologies, including instrumentation supporting next generation space telescope programs and other high precision optical systems. This is an opportunity to work on technically challenging projects alongside leading experts in optical science while helping develop the next generation of optical metrology systems.
About the Role
The Optical Systems Engineer will lead the development of complex optical test and metrology systems used to validate high performance optical instruments. This role requires strong systems level thinking combined with an understanding of optical system performance and testing. The engineer will work closely with multidisciplinary teams including optical scientists, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, and software developers to design, integrate, and validate custom optical metrology solutions.
Responsibilities
- Lead development of complex optical test and metrology systems
- Translate system level requirements into technical system architectures and development plans
- Coordinate cross functional engineering teams responsible for optical, mechanical, electrical, and software subsystems
- Support design reviews and guide system integration activities
- Ensure system performance requirements are understood and verified through appropriate testing and validation methods
- Work closely with technical leadership on projects involving advanced optical instrumentation
Qualifications
- Experience working with optical systems or optical instrumentation
- Strong understanding of optical system performance and optical testing
- Experience working in multidisciplinary engineering environments
- Ability to operate at a systems level while coordinating multiple technical disciplines
- Experience leading or contributing to complex engineering projects
Required Skills
- Experience with optical metrology or optical test systems
- Experience with optical modeling tools such as Zemax or Code V
- Experience working with precision mechanical systems used in optical instrumentation
- Experience supporting aerospace, telescope, or advanced optical technology programs

Pay range and compensation package
Salary range 120,000 to 180,000 depending on experience
