What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical Design Engineer position at Leonard Workforce Solutions?
About the Company
Leonard Workforce Solutions is conducting a confidential search on behalf of a growing organization seeking a qualified Mechanical Designer. Our client develops custom precision optical metrology systems, building measurement equipment tailored to specific customer requirements. Almost every project has a significant custom element, which means designs are rarely off the shelf.
A typical engagement starts with high-level requirements (envelope size, adjustability, resolution, mounting constraints) and ends with a fully documented subsystem ready for fabrication. This is a hands-on design role focused on turning engineering concepts into manufacturable hardware. The right candidate understands not just how to model parts, but how they are actually made.
About the Role
Working closely with engineers, you will take initial design concepts and develop them into complete, production-ready documentation packages including detailed 3D solid models, engineering drawings with appropriate tolerances and annotations, work instructions, and bills of materials. The emphasis is on design for manufacturability: producing clean, efficient designs that can be fabricated and assembled with minimal cost and complexity.
Engineers own the technically critical elements of each design, the parts where geometry, material, and tolerance directly affect measurement performance. The Mechanical Designer takes responsibility for everything else: translating the engineer's intent into a complete assembly that is straightforward to build and install. This is a contract-to-hire opportunity with a direct path to full-time employment for the right person. The team is small, dynamic, and incredibly supportive. Project teams are 3 to 5 people. Strong contributors gain visibility quickly with no layers of bureaucracy between you and impactful work.
