SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHERS (ASD, SUB SEPARATE, SPECIALIZED INSTRUCTION)
REPORTS TO: Works under the supervision of the School Principal and Special Education Director as appropriate.
SUMMARY: Special Education Teachers will support the needs of special education students. They will assist students
requiring specialized instruction, reinforcement, and regulation. They will also support parent outreach.
DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS POSITION INCLUDE:
Lawrence Public Schools is looking for exceptional and dedicated Special Education Teachers for
anticipated vacancies throughout the district.
Structure the classroom to establish and maintain an effective learning environment for students with
complex language, learning, and cognitive disabilities per student IEPs
Participate in the Team meeting process
Develop, implement, and monitor progress of IEP goals and objectives to ensure compliance
Develop appropriate instructional materials, activities, & lesson plans taking into consideration cognitive
levels and age- appropriateness of students
Establish clear learning targets for all lessons, units, and projects and communicate those learning
targets to students
Promote a supportive learning and teaching environment that supports the social/emotional well-being
of students
Plan and coordinate with specialists, related service providers, and other staff members to deliver
comprehensive programming for students
Communicate regularly with parents
Maintain accurate and complete student records as required by laws, district policies, and administrative
regulations
Assist in collection of data for providing appropriate interventions and recommendations
Maintain professional competence by participating in staff development activities, curriculum
development meetings, and other professional opportunities
Perform related duties as required by the building Principal and the Special Education Zone Director
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Licensed as a Moderate or Severe Special Needs Teacher through the Department of Elementary and Secondary
Education
Master’s degree from an accredited institution, preferred
Strong knowledge of the IDEA and MA Regulations.
Experience working with a diverse population of students and families within a multi-cultural community
Strong ability to multi-task and work within a fast paced environment focused on student learning, data collection,
and measurable outcomes
Strong understanding of LRE and FAPE
Experience working with students within the inclusion, small group and individual settings
Experience working with students with all types of disabilities, as outlined in the MA Disability Categories

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to move in and out of office, classrooms, buildings, and up and down stairs.
Must possess mobility to work in a classroom setting and to use standard equipment, including a computer
Strength to lift and carry materials weighing up to 20 pounds
Vision to read printed materials and a computer screen
Hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone.
Strength to lift and/or carry materials/items/persons weighing up to 75 pounds with assistance as the students may
need positioning.
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent of Schools may find appropriate and
acceptable.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Current authorization to work in the United States.
Meets all mandated health screening requirements
A record free of criminal violations that would prohibit public school employment.
Adheres to the Code of Professional Conduct for School Employees
Complies with drug-free workplace rules, board policies, and administrative guidelines/procedures.
Ability to establish working relationships with co-workers and function as part of a cohesive team.
Commitment to keep current with skills essential to the objectives of the position.
WORK YEAR: Full-time, 183 Days/Annually
SALARY: In accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Lawrence Teachers’ Union Local 1019,
American Federation of Teachers and the Lawrence Public Schools.
