POSITION OBJECTIVE:
The Literacy Coach ensures all K–6 students receive high-quality, evidence-based literacy instruction aligned to the Science of Reading. Serving as the campus literacy expert, the coach leads the development of instructional staff through job-embedded coaching, professional learning, and data-driven support to strengthen core ELA instruction and improve student outcomes across elementary grades.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead implementation of a high-quality K–6 reading curriculum and instructional practices
- Provide ongoing professional development, including facilitating PLCs and targeted training aligned to K–6 literacy needs
- Conduct non-evaluative classroom observations and coaching cycles, providing actionable feedback and clear next steps
- Model exemplar lessons and support teachers with lesson planning and effective instructional delivery across grade levels
- Promote and model high-quality teacher–student interactions
- Analyze student data (e.g., DIBELS, Acadience, iReady) to identify trends and guide instructional adjustments
- Support and monitor Tier 1 and intervention instruction, including targeted support for struggling readers
- Collaborate with teachers to implement research-based practices in phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension across K–6
- Provide guidance on supporting multilingual learners and students with reading difficulties
- Support family engagement and communication related to student literacy development
- Partner with school leadership to develop and implement a professional development plan with measurable goals for teacher effectiveness and student achievement
- Communicate regularly with leadership regarding school-wide literacy progress
- Participate in ongoing professional learning, including peer observations, research, and coaching development
The ideal candidate demonstrates deep knowledge of evidence-based literacy instruction across K–6 and experience supporting educators in implementing high-impact practices that improve student reading achievement.
Required qualifications include:
- Minimum of 5 years of elementary teaching experience, including K–6 (with strong experience in primary grades K–3)
- Proven success improving literacy outcomes through data-driven instruction
- Training in structured literacy aligned to the Science of Reading
- Experience using literacy assessments and screeners (e.g., DIBELS, Acadience, iReady)
- Strong instructional leadership skills (coaching, modeling, facilitating professional learning)
- Valid Elementary Education certification with a Reading or K–5 Literacy endorsement
- IVP Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card
Preferred:
- Master’s degree in Reading or related field
- 3-5 years Instructional Coaching experience
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Positions typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.
Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
