General Description

This study examines the relationships between occupation, extreme heat and health and disability outcomes throughout the lifecourse in the US. The project team seeks a research assistant(s) to work with interdisciplinary team on NIH-funded research project. This study uses restricted-access panel data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) linked with multiple sources of tract-level extreme heat data and occupational characteristics to investigate whether heat-sensitive work modifies the link between extreme heat and health outcomes, focusing on self-rated health, functional limitations, and chronic conditions, with analyses controlling for sociodemographic factors. Furthermore, the study will examine whether heat-sensitive work influences the relationship between extreme heat and work disability outcomes, including self-reported work limitation and Supplemental Security Income/Social Security Disability Insurance (SSI/SSDI) claims. Research will include evaluation of competing measures of occupational and heat exposure to shed light on the scientific value of these measures and inform their use in future research and practice.

The research assistant will need to commit 10-19 hrs /week, and work through the academic year. This position includes the p ossibility for continuation into the summer and following academic year.

Other Duties

  • Prepare data for analysis, including linking multiple datasets
  • Conduct statistical analysis
  • Create publication ready tables and figures
  • Review relevant literature
  • Participate in the drafting of manuscripts
  • Attend weekly or biweekly team meetings (remote work ok, but occasionally in-person meetings will be required)
  • Present results in seminars and at professional meetings
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Current CUNY undergraduate or graduate student
  • Experience analyzing survey data, ideally longitudinal (or panel) data
  • Experience with data cleaning and linking datasets
  • Solid background in quantitative analysis
  • Competency in Stata or R statistical software
  • Familiarity with spatial data and software a plus
  • Ability to work independently as well as in teams
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions
  • Excellent attention to detail and advanced organizational skills
