The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) will support the Department of Pathology and Ancillary Laboratory Services (DPALS) at Brook Army Medical Center (BAMC) at Joint Base San Antonio, located at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
Responsibilities
- Perform a full range of high-complexity clinical laboratory tests (qualitative and quantitative) in any one or a combination of the following sections of the laboratory: hematology, chemistry, cytology, histotechnology, urinalysis, serology, microbiology and blood bank.
- Ensure accurate specimen processing.
- Efficiently receive, process, and prepare patient specimens for analysis, minimizing delays and preventing errors that could impact patient care.
- Ensures timely and accurate testing.
- Deliver reliable laboratory testing.
- Perform a wide range of essential laboratory tests (hematology, chemistry, microbiology, etc.) according to established standards, providing critical data for diagnosis and treatment decisions.
- Ensure results are accurate and reliable, leading to improved patient outcomes.
- Prepare specimens for transport to MTF laboratory or for mail out.
- Maintain laboratory equipment readiness.
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment, ensuring optimal performance and minimizing downtime.
- Uphold quality control and assurance.
- Implement rigorous quality control procedures, validate test results, and identify potential errors, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of laboratory data.
- Promote confidence in test results and reduce the risk of misdiagnosis.
- Ensure regulatory compliance and safety.
- Adhere to all safety protocols, infection control procedures, and regulatory requirements (CLIA, OSHA, HIPAA), safeguarding the health and safety of patients and staff, and preventing costly penalties.
- Prepare biological waster for proper disposal.
- Facilitate effective communication and collaboration.
- Communicate effectively with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, providing timely and accurate information about laboratory tests and results.
- Foster a collaborative environment, enabling informed medical decisions.
- Support efficient laboratory operations.
- Manage inventory, assist with training, and participate in process improvement initiatives, contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the laboratory.
- Optimize resource utilization.
- Maintain data integrity and confidentiality.
- Protect patient privacy and ensure the confidentiality of all laboratory data, in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
- Perform phlebotomy services.
- Perform phlebotomy services obtaining quality samples for testing, ensuring patient comfort and minimizing discomfort.
- Meet the requirements for laboratory testing complexities as outlined in the Department of Defense Manual (DoDM) 6440-02, 29 May 2014 and Title 42, Code of Federal Regulation section 493.1489.
- Other duties as assigned
- Graduate from a medical laboratory technician training program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or educational program acceptable to the American Medical Technologist (AMT). Medical Laboratory Technicians will meet necessary Continuing Education (CE) requirements.
- Associates Degree certificate in: Laboratory Science, Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or Medical Technologist (MT)
- Possess and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Possess and maintain registration/certification through ASCP or AMT
- Minimum one (1) year experience within the last two (2) years post graduation as a medical laboratory technician.
- Possess attention to detail
- Ability to communication clearly and professionally
- Proficient with Microsoft Suite
- While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee may use repeated motions that include the arms, wrists, hands and/or fingers. The employee is occasionally required to walk, stand, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.
