EPRI’s Materials Program within the Generation Sector is seeking a highly motivated Engineer Scientist I to support cutting-edge research and development in materials science and chemistry. This dual-role position combines hands-on laboratory work with advanced programming to enhance digital content delivery and streamline internal processes. The successful candidate will contribute to the characterization of materials used in power plant systems—such as boilers, turbines, and environmental control equipment—while also developing web-based tools and applications to support the team’s research initiatives.

Programming and Web Development:
This salary range is an estimate, and the actual salary may vary based on various factors, including without limitation applicant's education, experience, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. The salary may also be adjusted based on applicant's geographic location.
This role is eligible to participate in EPRI’s annual incentive program. The amount of incentive varies and is subject to the terms and conditions of the plan.
This role is eligible to participate in EPRI’s standard employee benefit programs, which currently include the following: medical, dental, vision, 401k, STD/LTD and paid family leave, life and accident insurance, paid time off (flexible vacation, sick leave, and holiday pay).
EPRI participates in E-Verify, an online system operated jointly by the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration (SSA). EPRI uses the system to check the work status of new hires by comparing information from the employee's I-9 form against SSA and Department of Homeland Security databases.

Key Responsibilities
Programming and Web Development:
- Develop and maintain web-based engineering tools and static websites using Vue.js, VuePress, and Vuetify UI components.
- Create intuitive, modern web content from technical research data.
- Automate routine tasks and build frameworks for database management using Python, HTML, JavaScript, TypeScript, and Markdown.
- Collaborate with cross-sector teams to design innovative content delivery platforms.
- Explore integration of AI tools into the Materials Program’s digital infrastructure.
- Conduct analytical studies on corrosion and microstructure of steel, stainless steel, and nickel-based alloys.
- Operate advanced characterization equipment including SEM, XRF (micro and total reflection), hardness testers, and optical microscopes.
- Analyze and visualize technical data using Python and related libraries.
- Support sample preparation activities such as polishing and etching.
- Work with external contractors for specialized testing needs.
- Contribute to technical reports, presentations, and peer-reviewed publications.
- Assist project and program managers in executing research plans.
- Review progress, evaluate results, and implement improvements in methods or equipment.
- Present findings to internal stakeholders and external members.
- Passionate about transforming technical research into engaging web content.
- Skilled in web development and programming, with a strong design sense.
- Experienced in applied materials research and laboratory techniques.
- Organized, self-driven, and adaptable to evolving project needs.
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related technical field.
- 1–4 years of experience in a chemistry or materials lab setting.
- Proficiency in Python and data visualization libraries.
- Demonstrated experience with Vue.js framework and VuePress.
- Hands-on experience with micro-XRF and TXRF equipment.
- Willingness to learn and operate various lab characterization tools.
- Familiarity with physical metallurgy and alloy systems.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills.
