Under the general supervision of the Industrial Electrician Supervisor, this position:

  • Performs a variety of tasks in the maintenance of three phase industrial electrical equipment up to 4160 volts, including MCC, panel boards, standby generators, motors, pump controllers, HVAC equipment, switch gear, rack able breakers, VFD’S and soft starters and other electrical equipment in the Wastewater Pumping Stations.
  • Performs a wide range of complex preventive/corrective maintenance and general housekeeping to maintain continuous operation of industrial electrical equipment.
  • Orders necessary parts to restock, repair or replace all industrial electrical equipment throughout the pumping stations.
  • Utilizes computer and software to maintain work orders, requisition parts, for preventive and corrective maintenance.
  • Performs work in permit confined spaces, hazardous areas that require respiratory protection and personal protective gear, slippery and wet conditions.
  • Attends required electrical training to ensure work is performed to quality and safety standards.
  • Complies with local regulatory requirements and the National Electrical Code.
  • Subject to 24 hours call back and must, therefore, be able to work emergency overtime during the week and on weekends as needed.

The Ideal Candidate Must Have

  • We are looking for a lead electrician that leads by example. Someone who takes responsibility and accepts accountability for their actions and for the quality and integrity of their work.
  • We need someone who is service oriented and understands the importance of working with other departments in achieving the overall goals of the Pump Stations Branch, ultimately offering the residents of Fairfax County uninterrupted sewer service.
  • This position requires great communication with everyone on the pump stations team from fellow electricians to other trade shops, up to the supervisors and management team.
  • As a lead electrician you will need to have effective problem-solving skills, especially for the quick changing and unpredictable environment and situations that we encounter on a daily basis.
  • The ideal candidate for this position will have to be a team player.

When things fail, we need people that are going to step up and help out, however necessary. Teamwork is a vital part to the success of the Pump Stations Branch.

Employment Standards

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to the following:

graduation from high school, or a GED issued by a state department of education or equivalent; plus six years of experience as an industrial electrician.

Certificates And Licenses Required

  • A valid motor vehicle driver's license.
  • A valid Commonwealth of Virginia Master Electrician's license.
  • Confined Space Certification within 12 months of hire.

Necessary Special Requirements

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a driving record check, and a medical examination to the satisfaction the of employer.

The appointee to this position is subject to emergency callback 24 hours a day/seven days a week (24/7) to respond to snow, flood, and other emergencies requiring division resources.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One (1) year of experience working in an industrial setting and working on industrial electrical equipment.
  • Four (4) years of work experience observing electrical safe work practices.
  • One (1) year of experience reading one line and schematic drawings.
  • One (1) year of experience conducting preventive maintenance practices.

Physical Requirements

Ability to access facility equipment rooms, attics, and roofs. Ability to climb and work from fixed, extension, and step ladders two stories in height and scaffolding up 5 stories in height. Must enter confined spaces with a weight restriction of 310 lbs. Ability to discern and distinguish colors of electrical conductors, especially for Industrial equipment. Ability to drive county utility trucks and operate hoisting equipment. Ability to routinely climb ladders and stairs, kneel, crouch, crawl, bend, stoop, or twist their body to perform troubleshooting of industrial equipment and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Ability to lift and carry heavy equipment weighing up to 75 lbs. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to keep records and write in-work-related reports. Ability to use fingers to grasp, move, or assemble very small objects and to move two or more limbs together while remaining in place. Ability to work around and in contact with raw sewage. Frequent exposure to loud noises and rare exposure to airborne substances and routine climbing. Ability to work around chemicals such as lime, ferric chloride, sodium hypochlorite, sodium bisulfate, sodium hydroxide a, and other wastewater treatment chemicals. Must be physically fit to perform manual labor in all types of environments. This requires the ability to endure variable and extreme weather conditions such as hot, cold, during rain, etc. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
