Work Schedule: 8 Hr (8:00:00 AM - 4:30:00 AM)

Pay Range: $76.35 - $128.27 per hour

Summary

The Director of Pharmacy is responsible for all Pharmacy Department operations and functions within Rush University Medical Center’s full system continuum of care to provide integrated services for all hospital inpatient pharmacy locations. This is through direction, support, and development of supervisors and staff through collaboration with medical staff, other hospital directors, administrative staff, community groups, and agencies. Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.

Required Job Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of pharmacy with a Pharmacy degree.
  • Doctor of Pharmacy/PharmD.
  • Licensed or eligible for licensure as a Registered Pharmacist by the State of Illinois Board of Pharmacy.
  • Master’s degree in Healthcare, Business Administration, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Ten years of experience as a Pharmacist, with at least five years of experience in management in a complex hospital setting ((7 years if lacking the aforementioned Masters).
  • Experience in a large, complex pharmacy environment; exceptional understanding of pharmacy department processes.
  • Experience implementing and/or using technology to improve patient/medication safety and enhance productivity.
  • Experience recruiting and retaining pharmacists and pharmacy departmental staff in a competitive marketplace.
  • Advanced knowledge of the practice of institutional pharmacy, medication safety practices, drugs/solutions and delivery systems, drug interactions and incompatibilities, and current laws and regulations which affect the practice of pharmacy.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, computer systems in online information retrieval, and research utilizing online resources.
  • Ability to identify issues and problems and proactively implement strategies and resolutions in a logical and timely manner.
  • Leadership skills consistent with the mission and vision of Rush University Medical Center.

Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and direction to all aspects of pharmacy operations, including staff recruitment, formulary development and maintenance, quality management, regulatory compliance, utilization, and efficiency.
  • Works closely with nursing staff, medical staff, and physician residents to create an environment of safety and efficiency in treating patients.
  • Strengthens focus on excellence in a culture that measures quality and continuous improvement of performance to meet the needs and expectations of patients, community, and state regulations.
  • Assures that organizational and departmental policies and procedures are current, appropriate, and followed consistently.
  • Models and encourages the spirit of service and excellence in the department; understands and promotes the integration of the mission, vision, and values to the strategic goals and operations.
  • Works with hospital leadership to engage medical staff on a prospective basis to build consensus on pharmacy-related strategic initiatives and emerging medication trends and management that affect practice patterns.
  • Demonstrates that communication is the primary key in relationships; creates a culture that fosters open, honest, and respectful change.
  • Utilizes team-building strategies to promote positive relationships and develops cohesive departmental and intra-departmental work groups.
  • Assumes responsibility and accountability for fiscal management of the Pharmacy Department. Monitors the budget, analyzes variances utilizing data, and takes corrective action as necessary.
  • Analyzes trends, identifies opportunities, and implements changes in systems or technology to improve efficiency, productivity, and decrease costs.
  • Develops a work environment that promotes mutual respect, participation, growth, and effective use of employee talents.
  • Assesses staff development needs and ensures employees have necessary skills by providing staff education programs for mandatory compliance and ongoing staff education.
  • Identifies and ensures resolution of discrepancies between performance and standards through coaching, counseling, and feedback.
  • Encourages ideas, suggestions, and participation of others and involves others in planning, decision-making, and assessment processes.
