Job Summary

The Data Scientist works for the Health Sciences Strategy team in the University of Utah’s Office of the Senior Vice President for Health Sciences and reports directly to the Sr. Data Scientist and Executive Director of Strategy. Health Sciences Strategy develops data products and collaborates with varied University of Utah entities to craft health system strategy and implement initiatives.

To be successful in this role, candidates must be curious, proactive, and collaborative. The Data Scientist leverages wide-ranging data to support strategy craft and organizational planning. Success looks like:

  • Cleaning and leveraging new combinations of data to solve problems and find answers.
  • Applying statistical learning and data mining techniques to deliver concrete business outcomes.
  • Contributing to rapid data‑driven storytelling that helps leaders see problems and solutions faster.
  • Asking good questions, delivering well‑organized code and analyses, and communicating clearly with colleagues and health system leaders.
  • Working effectively with analysts, healthcare consultants, and clinicians, taking and incorporating feedback as part of a team-based problem-solving culture.
  • Adapting quickly to shifting priorities and tight timelines while maintaining a positive, team‑first attitude.

The Data Scientist will contribute to the analysis and interpretation of complex market, clinical, financial, and operational data to support strategic initiatives. Project work may include patient segmentation, cost modeling, market analysis, and health outcome analytics. Candidates must flex into many business and analytics areas to meet project needs, playing the role of analytics generalist when necessary.

This role has a hybrid schedule, requiring at least three days in the office per week in Downtown Salt Lake City with regular trips to the University of Utah Campus to collaborate with colleagues and clinical partners.

Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Senior Data Scientist and Executive Director of Strategy, you will:

  • Use descriptive statistics, predictive modeling, and other analytics techniques to synthesize unstructured and disjointed information into meaningful, compelling narratives to support the development of health system strategy.
  • Craft visualizations and interactive dashboards to summarize analytical findings and promote user/audience learning.
  • Support other health system entities as an internal consultant; acting as an expert resource for locating and gathering data, identifying and employing appropriate statistical methods, and creating data products.
  • Collaborate with data engineers and data scientists throughout the health system to further data science initiatives.
  • Stay up to date with developments and changing technologies via self-initiated professional development. This involves: continuing education courses, professional organizations, and industry conferences, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a quantitative field such as statistics, computer science, economics, applied math, or a related discipline is required. Graduate-level training (e.g., master’s degree) is preferred.
  • 6 years of related experience in the field or related area or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required.

This position has no responsibility for providing care to patients.

  • Preferred candidates will have:Proficiency with at least one programming language commonly used in data science (e.g., R or Python).
  • Understanding of core statistical and machine learning methods, including various supervised and unsupervised learning techniques.Experience cleaning, transforming, and analyzing structured and unstructured datasets.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present data and methods to business and clinical audiences.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet project deadlines.
  • Experience writing and interpreting SQL queries.
  • A graduate degree in a quantitative field (e.g. master’s or PhD)
  • Familiarity with dashboarding tools such as D3, Tableau, Power BI, R Shiny, or Plotly Dash.
  • A strong understanding of data wrangling and integration techniques.
  • Demonstrated experience in roles requiring proactive engagement with managers and leaders.
  • A portfolio of project work demonstrating well-documented, and modular code (e.g., via GitHub).
  • Exposure to geospatial analysis or spatial data visualization.
  • Knowledge of web scraping or use of APIs to retrieve external data.
  • Experience applying large language models (LLMs) and natural language processing in health and business analytics.
