Job Summary

Provides direct supervision of field crew staff and daily management of projects and activities under the direction of the Field Operation Manager or designee.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Surveying, Drafting, Pre-engineering, Geographic Studies, plus one (1) year of experience in a related field; OR five (5) years of experience in a related field; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

This position may be hired as a grade 14 or 15.

Grade 15 must possess a Utah State Land Surveyor License.

Must have or be able to obtain a valid Driver’s License issued by the State of Utah to operate a County vehicle.

Must receive a verified negative test result on a mandatory drug test before starting in this position. Will be subject to random alcohol and drug testing. May be subject to post accident and reasonable suspicion alcohol and drug testing.

Due to the nature of this position, the successful applicant must pass a required background check through fingerprinting and enrollment in the continuous RAP Back (Record of Arrest and Prosecution Back) program in accordance with current County Human Resources policy requirements.

Essential Functions

• Supervises staff, which includes hiring, orienting, training, assigning and reviewing work performance, annual work performance appraisals, and discipline.
• Assists in developing and implementing policies and procedures that effectively use personnel, materials, and equipment. Ensures use of safety equipment and traffic control procedures are in compliance with federal, state, and county regulations.
• Manages, organizes, and monitors projects to satisfy departmental commitments and obligations.
• Supervises field activities in support of boundary, topographical, and construction surveys for Salt Lake County and other agencies.
• Assists in determining and implementing plans regarding the direction and design of the County horizontal and vertical Survey Control System.
• Obtains, implements, coordinates, documents and ensures accuracy of all survey information needed to accomplish projects and survey work.
• Researches, reviews and interprets construction plans, maps and legal descriptions.
• Compiles, prepares, analyzes, maintains and monitors appropriate records of field data.
• Communicates complete, accurate and compatible project information with office and field personnel, County agency representatives, private surveyors, and government entities in the preparation and completion of work requests.
• Assists Field Director in monitoring expenditures.
• Investigates the validity of complaints on the surveyors office control network, and assists in corrective actions by using appropriate county policies and procedures.
• Represents the County Surveyor as a public relations liaison with private and public agencies on survey related issues.
• Recovers, manufactures, installs, repairs, references and maintains an inventory of survey monuments and supplies. Coordinates disbursements of monuments.
• Monitors and maintains survey vehicle, surveying equipment, safety equipment, and all other applicable tools.

• Principles, methods and techniques of effective traffic control
• Land surveying principles, techniques and laws
• Geodetic surveying and State Plane Coordinate System
• Computer software including AutoCAD, Microsoft Word, etc.
• Methods and procedures of abstracting records

• Read and interpret surveying/engineering designs, plans, specifications and survey field notes

Working Conditions And Physical Requirements

Work is normally performed in an outdoor environment with exposure to some physical risk and moderate physical effort. Must be able to lift up to 100 lbs on a regular basis.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THIS POSITION

This position is subject to being called to work prior to or after the scheduled shift in response to survey office needs, and in the event of an emergency.
