What are the responsibilities and job description for the Marketing Director position at Lens Distortions® Music & SFX?
Our Company
Lens Distortions® provides cinematic music to brands and filmmakers. We started in 2014 with a single niche product for video editors and have grown into a full SaaS platform of original music, sound effects, visual effects, and color presets. We’re in an exciting chapter of growth focusing more on B2B, where strong brands and interesting film/TV projects can get the most value from the distinguished quality of our assets. As a bootstrapped small-but-mighty team based primarily in Omaha, we sell to companies and filmmakers all over the world, helping their most important content achieve maximum impact.
The Role
We are looking for a lynchpin marketer to help make Lens Distortions a household name among video professionals. Someone experienced enough to understand all facets of marketing, yet scrappy enough to be in the trenches doing the work, figuring out what works best, and building a team over time. Someone strategic enough to understand how all the pieces of the machine fit together, analytical enough to make decisions based on revenue impact, and romantic enough about brand to understand that conviction is as important as utility.
You will be responsible for managing all marketing systems and projects within the company. A key focus will be on developing a robust B2B funnel, driving leads and building nurturing systems that consistently turn those leads into “hand-raisers” who are ready to talk to sales. Your mandate is to grow sales pipeline so we can grow the sales team. You’ll also be optimizing existing self-service funnels aimed at acquiring and retaining freelance subscribers.
We have some good systems in place to build upon:
- Weekly asset release campaigns
- A tightly focused influencer program
- Ongoing paid ads
- Email drips
- A disciplined sales process
But those systems alone won’t get us where we’re determined to go. That’s where you come in. You won’t know exactly what will or won’t work in our context. You’ll have lots of ideas. But you’ll need to show up on day one with a disciplined love of testing to figure out what works best.
We have more than a decade of overwhelmingly positive reputation among our customer base, which includes a growing number of incredible enterprises across industries like technology, lifestyle, automotive, athletics, aeronautics and aerospace… placements in major films and TV series… and a solid member base of freelance filmmakers. Most of them would tell you we’re a key secret ingredient in their success. But that’s just the thing: we’re a little too well-kept of a secret.
Because we sell assets to content professionals, content is at the heart of our marketing strategy. Storytelling about customers. Crafting iconic advertising. Building a podcast. Designing nice ads. Writing great copy. Creating engaging original content. It’s all part of the strategy and we’ll need to scale it up. But strong content strategy and execution isn’t enough to make this marketing machine work. You need to be strong in the revenue analysis side of marketing and all the inputs and outputs that lead to scaling while staying profitable.
Our Purpose
“In an increasingly superficial and commoditized world, we exist to perpetuate meaningful work.” That’s a line we penned around 2017, long before AI was on the tip of everyone’s tongue, mainly as an internal epiphany of what gets us out of bed in the morning. Commoditization has been a destructive force in our industry for a long time. Cheap music. Click bait content. An obsession with trends. These things will always be in overabundant supply.
We’re at a very interesting time in our industry. Video editors are getting bored with or downright opposed to incumbent platforms that supply music to video editors. Their “all things to all people” approach leaves them feeling uninspired. Generative AI solutions are looming, and will certainly have their place, but are not a replacement for the romance of stumbling on just the right assets to build a project around. We’re more of an alternative to hiring a custom composer or sound designer than we are a replacement for stock. We pre-make the stuff high-end filmmakers would ask someone to make custom for then… we anticipate their needs.
Most stock asset platforms come from the music industry or tech industry. They are opportunistic plays to package up comprehensive supply with mass demand. In this crowded industry, Lens Distortions has never been more relevant than we are right now. In an increasingly noisy world littered with content, the solution for these brands is not to make less content, it’s to make better content. Content professionals are recognizing the value of an asset provider with strong opinions… who isn’t afraid to be the best in the world at one thing (assets for cinematic content), instead of all things to all people. We’re looking for the right person to help us take our differentiated offering to the multitude of brands and creatives who need it. Is that person you? Throw your hat in the ring. We’d love to get to know you.
