Student Wellness Counselor (Part-time)

General Function

The Student Wellness Counselor is responsible for assisting in the screening process and providing short-term, solution-focused counseling services that address both personal and academic concerns, including issues related to mental wellness and substance abuse. This position plays a vital role in supporting current and prospective students in achieving their educational and life goals. The Counselor also facilitates presentations and workshops focused on personal and professional development, with a strong emphasis on wellness, mental health, and substance abuse awareness. Additionally, the role works closely with the Student Support and Disability Services Office to ensure equitable access for students with disabilities, in full compliance with applicable laws. This part time position requires availability for 20 hours per week.

Qualifications

Required:

• Master’s degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or a closely related field from an institution accredited by a federally recognized institutional accreditor
• One year of full-time counseling experience, or the equivalent in part-time experience, which may include masters-level internships
• Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities

• Clinical license (e.g., Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor/Associate (LCMHC/A), Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist/Associate (LCAS/A), Licensed Clinical Social Worker/Associate (LCSW/A)) in the state where the position is located
• Experience in a higher education setting, particularly a community college
• Bilingual or multilingual communication skills
• Strong understanding of counseling theory, techniques, and ethical practices
• Familiarity with student development theory and academic success strategies
• Proficiency in utilizing technology for student support and record keeping (e.g., student planning systems, MS Office, videoconferencing software)

• Typically involves working in an office environment
• Requires the ability to communicate with students, faculty, and staff in person, by phone, or via video conferencing
• May involve occasional travel between college campuses or to off-site locations for presentations and outreach events
• May require flexible hours, including some evenings, especially during peak enrollment periods or for special events

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

The duties of the Student Wellness Counselor include, but are not limited to:

• Counsel and advise students, on both an appointment and a drop-in basis
• Provide support to students with personal issues through active listening, coaching, referral, and crisis intervention
• Provide support and strategies to address issues that negatively impact academic performance, such as workshops on topics like time management, improving executive functioning skills, coping with stress, and behavior modification
• Consult with the Student Support and Disability Services Coordinator for referral to community and state resources as deemed necessary
• Conduct workshops, groups, and outreach activities to promote student and campus community mental health and well-being
• Consult with faculty and staff regarding student concerns and provide training on mental health awareness and available resources
• Make referrals to appropriate college and community resources as needed
• Represent the College professionally and handle all students inquires confidentially
• Maintain accurate and timely records of student interactions and progress
• Participate in program/service development activities
• Perform other duties as assigned and required for the department and/or college
